Nokia - XS-010G-Q (And possibothers10X-Q)
This is a summary of E2E installation and setup/mistakes for the Nokia XS-010G-Q.
High level of the steps:
1. Purchase XS-010G-Q and cable
2. Register with Delta
3. Connect - Software update
4. Change/update router settings (VLAN)
5. Run
I'll actually start from the end - when the ONT (Modem) works properly:
1. Power - on permament green.
2. PON - on permament green
3. Alarm - off
4. Data - blinking green
General comment - I must say, I didn't anticipate it being so "hard". I'm not a common user, but not an expert as well. I don't have a problem with DIY to a certain extent. I do think Delta should either open bridge mode on the Nokia they provide or (which I think should be preferred to them) provide a Nokia XS-010G-Q for most users. I don't see why 99% of users would need in the foreseeable timeline a 10G connection at home.
When I was with Caiway - I "fought" with them and got a modem only device.
Preface:
As I moved from Caiway to Delta (mainly due to their sale price of 35€) I then learned their device doesn't have bridge mode so I ended up on this thread. As someone who has a "simple" network at home, I didn't want to spend more than a 100€ on some other ONT (XS-010X-Q - which is also hard to get as new or the Huawei - which gets to around 200€ with shipping). So, luckily, in this thread I was made aware of the Nokia XS-010G-Q (only 30-40€) and once @
Hammetje approved it's working as expected on the network I "immediately" ordered it and got it in.
1. Order
I ordered the XS-010G-Q via
EBAY link (currently out of stock - I'm amazed we have only one source at logical price all over).
Also ordered
a cable (according the TS link) - it's just 4.5€
2. Register the Device with Delta
Once I had the device at hand I contacted the chat and followed the "script" - provided all info as needed, with a somewhat fake MAC address. (Please notice if you do it during Friday-end of Sunday it will only happen on Monday during the day).
3. Connecting the device
First thing to connect is to use
this guide (from TS) and use the "empty" FTU in the fiber connection to insert the cable you bought on step 1 into. - Very easy - one "tip" - check which way the "tooth" is facing - at least I did check before inserting.
Once connected (notice you can use the AC adapter from Delta's Nokia for the XS-010G-Q) Power goes on, PON is blinking. After some time/night - PON stop blinking and become permament - it is connected to the system. BUT, you still have the wrong version of the software. You can't update it on your own (download and install) and it must come via Delta to your device. Here via the thread I got a few comments/tips which not all were correct - please pay attention to what I wrote in the beginning (of how it should work as expected):
1. If the PON is permament - it means everything is OK from Delta's side, it only a wrong router setup that is wrong. - This was false (to a certain extent I assume).
2. To be confirmed - if you leave it connected at night - the update will come in as the system updates it automatically - seems the system does it only for the XS-010X-Q, and you need our dear friend R3D to push the update to your modem.
Once confirmed - I'll update this point.
The problem I experienced (later known as related with the software) is that if the PON is connected - the data disconnects. So if I would disconnect the fiber - I could for example reach the UI of the Nokia and the data led was blinking. Once I connect the Fiber - the Data dies. I also saw this on my router which claimed at that point that it's not connected to anything on the WAN side.
Then came the saviour in the thread who said - this sounds exactly like the problem I've had with the XS-010X-Q before updating the software.
After 2 Nights it didn't work, I wrote a message to R3D, and on the 3rd night I connected it again. Morning comes and I see both PON on and Data blinking - Eureka.
The active version is the latest and the standby is the original one that had the issue:
4. At that point I connected to my router (Asus Zenwifi CT8, small tip - I connected it to the Delta's Nokia so it would get an IP address and easily addresable, made the changes and only then connected it again to the XS-010G-Q).
2 things to do on the router:
a. Change from access point mode (needed when using Delta's Nokia) to router mode
b. Setup VLAN - in my case via the "IPTV" setup. You need to put the VLAN tagging on 100.
5. That's it, it's running fine, internet is as expected, back to my own router and settings.
Thanks to those who helped directly and indirectly. It was an "interesting" experience.
