I was hoping so much that this was going to be fixed with the pebble time. I hope it is just a software bug. Would any pebble official be able to clarify if it is a software or hardware issue?

"This" is fixed in Pebble Time. Time does not use an elastomeric display connector. So while this might be a similar symptom, or even the same problem electrically, it's still a different issue. But things can still break, and fail during assembly.
Would any pebble official be able to clarify if it is a software or hardware issue?
They are recalling it to figure out exactly what happened, and correct it, I doubt we'll be told the details, but I'm sure they'll make whatever adjustments they can to make sure that incidents like this are kept at a minimum.

That's definitely a hardware issue.
