Five Easy Steps to Physics Fun with Half-Life 2
1. Enable the console. From the main menu, select OPTIONS – KEYBOARD (it’s a tab at the top) then ADVANCED. Select the “show the console” checkbox and you’re in business.
2. Enable Cheats! Bring up the console with the tilde (~) key and type in “sv_cheats 1”.
3. (OPTIONAL) To play with the “super” gravity gun type “map d3_citadel_04” into the console.
4. Load whatever map you’d like to run wild on by typing in “changelevel mapname”. For example, typing “changelevel d1_trainstation_01” would load the very beginning of the game.
5. Bind some keys with the “phys_timescale x” command. Here’s the commands I used on the show, for reference:
bind "tab" "phys_timescale 1" ß Pressing TAB returns the physics to normal speed.
bind "q" "phys_timescale .2" ß Pressing Q slows the physics down drastically.
bind "capslock" "phys_timescale 0" ß Pressing CapsLock stops objects cold!
You can use whatever values you’d like, so experiment away!
*Note: To check if a key is being used by another command, type “bind x” (where “x” is place the character you want to check). So, typing “bind e” would show you what pressing the “e” key does – before you go and make it slow physics down or something.
Feel free to toss barrels and bad guys (if you’re using the super grav gun) around to your heart's content. Just don’t try to pick up the Jeep -- it may crash your machine. Whoops.
OH! I almost forgot… If you want to have optimal enjoyment, type “god” into the console to make your character invulnerable and use “impulse 101” to give yourself every weapon and unlimited ammo. Check out the full list of console commands
here.
