Ik kreeg als eigenaar van een Sovol SV06 plus vandaag deze mail van Sovol, die wel saillant was mbt hun streven naar het werken met open source. Ze vinden het lastig in de concurrende markt.
Hello everyone,
SV06 PLUS is fully open source on github now, including Step file, STL file, design drawing, firmware source code and touch screen icon. You will get all that you want to get. As far as we know, we are the only one Chinese 3d printer manufacturer to fully open hardware source and software source.
Since SV06 fully open source we have seen that many of you modified their sv06, some can be still be recognized, some are a little bit hard to be recognized, anyway, we believe you enjoy these modification process. When we decided to open source for SV06 at the beginning to announce the sv06, we guess that many people may want to customize the colors of those injected parts even though we still think our Sovol blue is the coolest. And the fact is as we guessed. Many people printed parts with black, white, pink, grey, green, orange to replace the blue parts, also a lot of people upgrade to klipper firmware. We are very glad to see your creavity, make this product more possibility. Fully open source is a great and a meaningful thing that we are willing to do if there is no any concerns or risk.
But actually we feel pressure all the time about open source. On the one hand, because there are the history of open source in 3d printer industry, many of people think it’s obligation for manufactor to fully open source. Some of people (included sovolers and non-sovolers) push us to open source every week after release a new printer and sometimes break the product reputation on social media. On the other hand, we want keep open source timeline not open source when release but at least after people receive the pre-order printer 2-3months later. It’s also to protect our product and our small market. For every printer we have to take 5-10 months to develop and prepare for release, these are hard work behind our engineer team and marketing team in our small company. Once fully open source, the competitor or organization can make another similar printer in a very short time. If that’s made by a larger brand, once that product release and there are similar design or parts, people would think about that we copied their design. The large brand has large exposure, people see that product first and would think that the one they see later is the copy. This is indeed happened before. Another little problem, some users give up the original parts and firmware, when the issue happens, which increase the time to identify the issue, but this won’t be our resistance.
So we usually open the mainboard source code in 3-5months after release a machine to obey the marlin firmware agreement. We hope you know that we will keep open source for the resource that we used from the third party like Marlin and Klipper, and we really appreciate their open source and contribution to the 3d printer industry and community. About keep open source for the hardware, we are unable to make a promise there, we will stay tune the market changes. We cares about you also need to cares about our future. If one day, Sovol grows up like Tesla and has many core technology and no need to worry that other competitors take a look the source code, we would be very happy to fully open source as soon as possible after release the product.
Really appreciate your support to our product. Enjoy the original source of SV06plus, happy printing! If you made any modification later, welcome to share in Sovol SV06/SV06Plus Group
