Hieronder vraag en antwoord in tekst.
Good afternoon,
I would like to open a Bank account with CityBank Ireland.
However, before i do so, i would like to understand the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme in more detail.
My question is: how will foreign customers (individuals) be paid in case of a bankruptcy?
I have been told that this will be done by cheque payment?
For several years already, cheques are not accepted by any financial institution in my country (The Netherlands).
Could you please let me know how the Irish DGS will cover this for foreigners?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Kind regards,
Central Bank of Ireland - CONFIDENTIAL
Hi Ton,
The DGS protects eligible deposits up to a limit of €100,000 per person in the credit institutions covered by the Scheme. It includes branches of Irish institutions operating in EEA Member States.
Under European Union (Deposit Guarantee Schemes) Regulations 2015 (S.I. No 516 of 2015), depositors of branches of Citibank outside the Republic of Ireland will be issued their payment compensation by the DGS Scheme of the branch member state. The Irish DGS will share details of eligible deposits with our European DGS colleagues. Our European DGS colleagues will make compensation payments on behalf of the Irish DGS as early as possible. Please note that there may be a requirement for depositors to register their details with the DGS Scheme of the branch member state in order to facilitate payment. Details on payment methods and processes are available via the website of the branch member state.
I am sending you a link to our website where you will find more information on the Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

I hope you will find information helpful.
