The XF 23mm f2 exhibits some softness at very close range and or at the largest apertures, so is best-suited to subjects over a meter away,

It's soft wide-open at f/2 at close distances. This softness is from excess spherical aberration. It returns to being very sharp as stopped down, and it's sharp at regular distances, but don't shoot it at f/2 at very close distances unless you want a slight soft-focus effect:

It does seem to soften up at wide open aperture when used for close focusing, a bit like on the X100 series, although not nearly as bad.

– Not the best performer for very close objects (under 25cm) at the range of f2 to f3.6 but you can compensate with revealing the full high levels of microcontrast.

I sold the 23 f2 for this very reason. You have to get close to kids and when open the results aren’t acceptable IMO.

Check out lenstip.com. I think what he was referring too is that the 23/f2 doesn't hit its sharpest until f4 -f5.6. The edges are weaker, but overallI think it's probably decent even wide open, unless you pixel peep.

Optical aberrations which worsen the image quality by f/2.0 are so significant that, combined with the curvature of the field, they might cause a bit of back focus. In fact the center of the testing chart is sharp and when even at the minimum focusing distance the depth of field contains the target there should be no problem in photos taken from greater distances.

Aan de andere kant, als je het niet ziet, dan is het er niet.
Misschien ook wel goed beschreven:
But I did notice that when I was shooting very closely there was a slight softness. Soft might be a poor word choice because it’s not even that it’s slightly soft, it’s just not quite as crisp.
