Diablo 3We’re developing Diablo III to be the definitive action role-playing game, and a true continuation of the Diablo series. Players will create a hero from one of five distinct classes, such as barbarian or witch doctor, each equipped with an array of spells and abilities. As these heroes adventure through rich and varied settings, unraveling an epic storyline and engaging in combat with hordes of monsters and challenging bosses, they’ll grow in experience and ability and acquire items of incredible power. The game takes place on Sanctuary, a world of dark fantasy. Unbeknownst to most of its inhabitants, Sanctuary was saved some twenty years ago from the demonic forces of the underworld by a few brave and powerful heroes. Most of those warriors who directly faced Hell’s armies -- and were fortunate enough to survive -- went mad from their experiences. And most of the others have buried their haunted memories and pushed the horrors from their thoughts. In Diablo III, players will return to Sanctuary to confront evil in its many forms once again. Diablo III will be a fitting sequel to Diablo II, with the easy interface, fast-paced action, and visceral gameplay that Diablo players have come to expect and enjoy. It will also include many new features that will take the Diablo action-RPG experience to the next level. We look forward to going into much more detail on our plans for Diablo III as development on the game progresses. What’s new about Diablo III compared to the previous Diablo games?Exciting new classes like the witch doctor bring new gameplay options to the table. Returning classes, like the barbarian, have been completely redone with new skills to give them a feel unique to Diablo III. New customization options will provide for an even greater level of character specialization than the previous Diablo games, allowing the player to create unique characters brimming with power.Diablo III is powered by a new graphics engine that can display characters and hordes of monsters in lush, fully 3D environments. Powerful special-effects systems and Havok-powered physics allow the player to lay waste to Hell’s minions in spectacular ways. Also, Diablo III builds on the random environments of the previous Diablo games by introducing a host of new ways to create random scripted events throughout the game. This creates a dense and exciting world alive with quests, NPCs, dynamic encounters, and viciously challenging new monsters and bosses. Diablo III’s environments add a great deal of interactivity to the game, including destructible elements and environmental obstacles that can be turned against your enemies. In addition, Diablo III will benefit from Battle.net upgrades that will provide some exciting new features for players. Cooperative online play remains a primary focus, with multiple enhancements being planned to make connecting with your friends easier and cooperative gameplay even more fun. We’ll have more details on all these aspects as well as other exciting new features at a later date. StorylineTwo decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn. When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells – and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.
ElixirsA Vitality and a Willpower elixir were seen to drop during the gameplay trailer. It is suspected that these would give a boost very much like the known values of the Strength and Dexterity elixirs. Elixirs have ranks, which are represented by a number on the end, it is not known whether higher ranks will increase the effect or the duration (or both) of elixirs.GemsGems found in the BlizzCon 2008 demo were much similar to ones found in Diablo II, as they had a colour, and a quality. Different colour types would have different themed effects on items, and the quality would determine how big the effect would be. What was new was that they also had a "cut", like jewels from World of WarCraft. Names could like this: "Chipped Star Topaz", implying that more sorts of gem names (and attribute bonuses) will be available.![]() ![]() ![]() Health Globes![]() The drop rate is quite low, but with the amount of monsters coming at players, there should rarely be a lack of orbs, and when they are far between, there is always potions. Additional tweaks have also been promised. InventoryThe slots in Diablo III bags work very differently from the inventory slots in Diablo II. Diablo III is moving away from the "Tetris-style" inventory of different sized items, in preference for a more World of Warcraft style storage system with items fitting into slots, and additional bags increasing the storage capacity of each character. The inventory storage has changed numerous times during development, and will likely change again. The most recent information was released on March 30, 2009, with BlizzCast #8. As of that date, a character's storage space is divided into three separate tabs, opened by clicking them below the paper doll. Each tab has its own colour scheme and art style, The Three Tabs are: • Large Item Tab/Backpack - Used for large items such as weapons and armor. One large item goes into one large slot. There is space for 12 such spaces, at maximum (once larger bags are found). • Small Item Tab/Pouch - Used for storing smaller things like Runes, Gems, Scrolls and Potions. There are 24 such spaces at maximum. • Quest Tab/Quest chest - Used for storing Quest items. This tab has not been seen opened, so nothing is known about its maximum capacity. Mana GlobesMana Globes are orbs of magical energy that function much like health globes; they restore mana (25% of the maximum was the listed amount) when a character runs through them. As you might expect, they look just like health globes, but are blue, instead of red.SkillRunes![]() Story ScrollsStory scrolls are information delivery systems found through the dungeons in Diablo III. When found and clicked on, story scrolls provide exposition via explanatory dialogue, as though your character were reading it. A small icon of an open book appears on the lower right of the screen, with stop, play, and close window buttons above it, like a medieval version of winamp. The story scrolls basically replicate the function of the secret tomes found throughout the dungeons in Diablo I and II, but you need not stand there and watch the text roll up the screen while hearing the narration. Thanks to the improved interface in Diablo III, you can listen to it while you fight, shop, or just stand still, and you can stop, replay, or pause the scrolls at any time. Only one scroll, Lachdanan's, was present in the BlizzCon 2008 demo, but there will be others in the final game. It's not known if they will require the scrolls to listen to, or if they'll be added to an interface like the Quest window, allowing you to play or replay them whenever you wish. TalismanThe Talisman was part of the inventory interface in the Blizzcon build (October 2008). It was seen between the two weapon slots in the inventory, and when clicked a bronze, circular disk appeared over the character. There were 9 slots on the talisman, with lines connecting some of them. It had no function in the Blizzcon build, and could not be clicked or activated in any way.In interviews at the show, Jay Wilson disclosed that it was something they were playing around with during development. It's called the "Talisman" and it's an "attribute modifier that used gems," according to Jay. There was gems to be found in the BlizzCon demo, but the talisman was not functional, so no players could attempt to experiment with it. Jay said they'd rejected the Talisman the way it had been working, and that it was now non-functional, but that they would probably do something else with it. Features like this are good to keep in mind when pondering the game balance and design of Diablo III. New interfaces and features can (and will) be added, such as skill runes, that radically change the balance of the game, the utility of items, and more. People not on the D3 Team can never know just how much importance to place on various issues, since what we see from the outside is not necessarily what's going on inside.
![]() I came to see firsthand the barbarians, those near-legendary, immense, relentless, dual-wielding furies of the combat dwelling upon their sacred Mount Arreat. Instead, I stand here looking at a mountain that has been torn asunder by some extraordinary force. The sight, I must confess, is incomprehensible. Yet what I see before me cannot be denied....
