VIA Technologies today made its first public demonstration of the VIA K8T800 chipset running the 64-bit MandrakeSoft 2.1 Server Operating System at booth #1776 at the LinuxWorld Expo at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. It transpired that VIA’s long-awaited K8T800 core-logic supports two additional 800MHz 32-bit HyperTransport links and supports Dual AMD Opteron processors configurations.
Earlier unofficial sources claimed that the K8T800 supported only one AMD Athlon 64 or AMD Opteron processors, but the reality appeared to be different. Last year a very-well known manufacturer of server equipment planned a VIA P4X400-based mainboard for two Intel Xeon processors, however, since VIA did not have license on the Quad Pumped Bus, the mainboard maker did not release the product. It looks like this year VIA is trying to enter the 2P server/workstation market again, but this time with AMD’s 64-bit processors.
VIA K8T800 AGP8x tunnel works in pair with the VIA VT8237 I/O controller.
The VIA K8T800 demo system is based on the new MS-9130 server mainboard produced by MSI.
VIA K8T800 and MSI’s MS-9130 are positioned as solutions for applications like web-servers, database deployment, application & file servers as well as for demanding design and engineering applications, including graphics rendering, data asset management and CAD based design.

ACCORDING TO AMDBOARD, still-kicking-about PC maker Gateway is ready to start selling AMD-powered PCs again and may well do so with the launch of the Athlon 64 on September 23.
Monsieur Gilles at AMDBoard says he has seen confidential AMD documents suggesting as much, but has been speculating on the date of the deal.
The agreement is likely to extend to Opteron chips as well as AMD’s 64-bit desktop offerings, says Gilles, here. Documents we have seen suggest Gateway nemesis Dell isn't on the same list. µ

AMD REALISED that it should do a few paper launches of its extremely hyped Athlon 64 core even before the CPU is quite ready to be shown to the world.
We understand that AMD will announce Athlon 64 as well as its official Logo on the 12th of August but at this time there won't be any benchmarks.
It seems to us that AMD just wants to warm up the things before it's actually ready to show it. The launch date of CPU that will be followed with benchmarks remains the 22nd of September as originally re-scheduled.
The 22nd is the first day of Computex -- one of the most important computer trade shows, that takes place in Taiwan.
The 3200+ will be a 2 GHz core as the INQ wrote earlier, although the original plan was for the 2GHz CPU to be called 3400+.
So, after the 12th of August you will know what the Athlon 64 core looks like, and its all important logo, but it seems to us that the first CPUs won't arrive until October at the earliest.
A few other people suggested that this time AMD will be much better providing samples for reviews as it's almost impossible to get any samples from AMD for last few months. The 400 front side Athlon is one rare bird in test beds.
And talking about rare birds, perhaps AMD US doesn't realise that the 12th of August is called The Glorious Twelfth, as it's the date people can start shooting grouse in the UK. Not so glorious for the grouse – the plural isn't grice, by the way...
