The “Nub-Proofed” Guide To Xbox Media Center Quick Install/Upgrade
This tutorial is split into four different methods of installation. Please select the method that suits your needs best:
Fresh, Non-Dashboard Install:
Use this method of install if this is your first time installing Xbox Media Center and you want to use it as a program, to run along side your current Dashboard.
Fresh, Dashboard Install:
Use this method of install if this is your first time installing Xbox Media Center and you wish to use it as your Dashboard.
Upgrade, Non-Dashboard Install:
Use this method of install if you have a previously installed version of Xbox Media Center.
Upgrade, Dashboard Install:
Use this method of install if you have a previously installed version of Xbox Media Center and you wish to use it as your Dashboard.
Required Items:
• Modified Xbox Console Machine
• Latest CVS (Release) of Xbox Media Center (select this file: “#xbins-kai-xbmc.cvs.11.20.04.stable.rar”)
• An FTP program. I highly recommend “Flash FXP” for this install. I will be using this program in the tutorial
• An Evolution X (EvoX) Boot Disk, (for the “Upgrade, Dashboard Install”)
Fresh, Xbox Media Center Installation (Non-Dashboard Setup)
Step 1:
After you extract your latest version of “Xbox Media Center”, rename the folder to “XBMC” if it is not already named so. Next, locate and open the file "xboxmediacenter.xml" in notepad.
Step 2:
In notepad, go to "Edit", located on the top toolbar, and click on "Find". In the text field, type:
“<default>Q:\shortcuts</default>”
After you locate the above line, edit it so it is directed to your games folder. For example, if you store your games in a "Games" folder on your "E:\" drive, it should look like this:
"<default>E:\Games</default>"
Now, save the file and exit.
Step 3:
Open your FTP program and connect to your Xbox. Navigate to your Application/Programs folder.
For Example:
"E:\Apps\"
or
"E:\Programs\"
Step 4:
Copy your "XBMC" folder over to "E:\Apps" (or which ever folder you use for your other applications). After the transfer completes, reboot your Xbox.
Step 5:
After your Dashboard reloads, go to your "Applications" menu and locate "Xbox Media Center". Click on it and enjoy!!
Fresh, Xbox Media Center Installation (Dashboard Setup)
Step 1:
After you extract your latest version of “Xbox Media Center”, rename the folder to “XBMC” if it is not already named so. Next, locate and open the file "xboxmediacenter.xml" in notepad. On the fifth line down, you should see this line:
"<home>-</home>"
Edit the line so it looks like this:
"<home>E:\Dashboards\XBMC\</home>"
Step 2:
Next, in “Notepad”, go to "Edit", located on the top toolbar, and click on "Find", in the text field, type:
"<default>Q:\shortcuts</default>".
After you locate that line, edit it so it is directed to your games folder. For example, if you store your games in a "Games" folder on your "E:\" drive, it should look like this:
"<default>E:\Games</default>"
Step 3:
Again, go to "Edit", and then "Find" enter this line in the text field:
"<dashboard>C:\evoxdash.xbe</dashboard>"
Edit this line to look like this:
"<dashboard>C:\default_evoxdash.xbe</dashboard>"
Step 4:
Open your FTP program and connect to your Xbox. Navigate to the “E:\” folder. Hit the "Insert" button to create a new folder and name it "Dashboards". Enter the new folder. On the PC side of your FTP program, transfer the “XBMC” folder to "E:\Dashboards".
Step 5:
Next, navigate to the "C:\" folder on your Xbox. Look to the PC window and find the file "default.xbe" then right-click on it and select "Transfer As". Type this in the text field:
"evoxdash.xbe"
(If you do not have the option "Transfer As", then rename "default.xbe" to
the above name, prior to uploading it to your Xbox. As well, if you already
have a file named "evoxdash.xbe" rename it to "default_evoxdash.xbe"
prior to uploading the newly named file to the "C:\" folder).
Transfer the "xboxmediacenter.xml" file to the "C:\" folder as well.
Step 6:
Reboot your Xbox and Enjoy!!
Upgrade, Xbox Media Center Installation (Non-Dashboard Setup)
Step 1:
After you extract your latest version of “Xbox Media Center”, rename the folder to the current name you have your “Xbox Media Center” set to.
For Example:
"E:\XBMC"
Step 2:
Load to your Dashboard and connect to your FTP program. Navigate to this directory: "E:\UDATA". Locate and delete this directory: "0face008". Next, navigate to the "E:\TDATA" folder. Delete the same folder as before, "0face008", from the directory.
Step 3:
Next, navigate to your "Xbox Media Center" folder and delete it. Keep this window open for the next step.
Step 4:
On the PC side of your FTP program, navigate to your "Xbox Media Center" folder and copy it to your Xbox, it should be located where your previous install was. After the transfer completes, reboot your Xbox.
Step 5:
After your Dashboard reloads, go to your "Applications" menu and locate "Xbox Media Center". Click on it and enjoy!!
*Note: Upon each upgrade, PLEASE delete ALL THREE folders before you upgrade to the new version of "Xbox Media Center". if you just overwrite the old files, you more than likely will get errors, please do yourself a favor, do everything from scratch before uploading the new version to your Xbox. The IRC help channels will thank you for doing it and saving them some time too... ;-)*
Upgrade Xbox Media Center Installation (Dashboard Setup)
*Note: If you already have had a previous install of "Xbox Media Center", I will assume you have some previous knowledge of how this install works, and how to edit the "xboxmediacenter.xml" file to suit your directory structure. If you are not sure how to do this, please refer to the other install method: "Fresh, Dashboard Install" to catch up.*
Step 1:
After you extract your latest version of “Xbox Media Center”, rename the folder to the current name you have your “Xbox Media Center” set to.
For Example:
"E:\XBMC"
Step 2:
At this point, if you have a second dashboard, I suggest you load it. If you do not have a second Dashboard, an "Evox Boot Disk" should be fine. After you load into the alternate Dashboard, connect to your FTP program and navigate to this directory: "E:\UDATA".
Step 5:
Next, navigate to the "C:\" folder on your Xbox. Look to the PC window and find the file "default.xbe" and right-click on it, select "Transfer As".
