The producer of LOCK ON, Matt Wagner, answers your questions, asked on the forum of Checksix!
(C6) Firstly, thanks for having agreed to answer our questions, Matt.
(C6) Why has Ubi software suddenly renamed "Lock on: Modern Air Combat" in "Lock-on: Air combat Simulation"for the European market? Do they have a reason for that?
(MW) We think that the title must reflect the aspect "simulation" of the game, it is what is the most appreciated(valued?) by fans.
(C6) In connection with the flightmodel and embarked electronics: did you decide on a detailed procedure of engine-start? If not, do you think that it will be possible to add it in the future?
(MW) Different from Flanker2.0, the starting and shutdown were added in Lock On to represent this function, it was creates with two keys.
We work hard to finish Lock On, and we did not take any decisions on the future products of the Lock On range.
(c6) Of course, much of people are perplexed as to the level of the avionics of the units, and especially of the Russian units, their electronics embarked, the handling of the radar, etc. since you declared that it would be added only "if you have time.". Can you give us the last news concerning the development of the US and Russian avionics?
(MW) The avionics of the f15C and A-10a is now finished, and I believe that fans of realism will like it. In addition, because we have a time limited to buckle the project (we cannot suffer an additional delay), the avionics of the Russian units is the one presents in flanker 2.0 (which is more faithful than any other game that has the Russian units, to this day!).
(c6) And in connection with navigationtools and the comms with the controltower? Will we have TACAN-channels?
(MW) Navigation will be done by looking at INS-systems and the tower will give the instructions for: taxi, takeoffs and landings. We do not have projects of integration of TACAN for the moment.
(c6) Will damage be detailed like 2nd World war simulations(such as il2), or will damage be reproduced in a random way on the modelled units?
(MW) The damage has effects on the breakdownspanel, flight performance, and graphically. For example, it is possible to lose pieces of the units at the place of the damage.
(c6) What is the behavior and difficulty of SAMs IA? Do the radars shut down to avoid the destruction, as in reality? Do different SAMs communicate and cooperate between eachother? And which are the infos that the player can receive from the AWACS and EWR?
(MW) That could not be included in this version, but we would like it included later. No promises that it will be done.
(c6) In connection with the electronic war, that is it effects ECM? Will the units of electronic warfare be available? And will the reliefs have an effect on the embarked radars (no "look-down") and the radars on the ground? Will each units have its own radar capacities (realistic) with its simulated qualities and defects?
(MW) The apparatuses will have their correct ECM pods and they will have various levels of effect on the various radars. Moreover, the relief will have an effect on the radars and the Doppler limitations will be modelled (Doppler notch).
Each apparatus has its own type of radar.
(c6) Can you say what possibilities will be offered to us in connection with the flightgroups and their composition? Is the limiting number always of 4 units? Groups with mixed planes (e.g.: su27 with su33?) will be possible? Will we be able to choose between various types of formations in flight?
(MW) The flights consist of groups upto 4 aircraft, and of multiple unit types with other missions can be assembled in a package. During play, the player will be able to choose between several types of formations for him and his flight.
(c6) Many amongst us, were impressed by the screenshots showing the weatherconditions. But will the weather be dynamic? (ex: if you take off by a blazing sun, can you find yourselves in a storm over of the objective? What would happen if lightning struck the plane? And could the weatherconditions weaken the performance of radar?
(MW) Lock On possibly has the most detailed weather options for a project of this type but these conditions will be static. Theoretically, it is possible that a lightning strikes a unit, but we did not provide that radar is affected by weather conditions.
(c6) What will in-flight refueling be like? Will the docking-sequence be harder than in flanker 2.0, not automatic? Will several people be able to refuel themselves at the same time in multi-player?
(MW) The in-flight refueling can be made entirely manually. The possibility of refueling oneself with a multi-player: not yet implemented (but not definitive).
(c6)Will there be no activity on the bridge of the aircraft carriers? Will we have a special installation for the landings and the comms, like Janes F-18 for example? Will landings and takeoffs in multi-player be possible?
(MW) Lock on is focused on groundbased operations, not naval. Except for a few additional naval units, the possibility are the same ones as in Flanker 2.0.
(c6) Is there music in Loacs? Will it be possible to have personalized menus, music for takeoff or for flight etc... As in il2 Sturmovik?
(MW) Lock On includes an energetic original band, rock'n'roll music for menus, successful missions and failed mission.
(c6) can you give us an idea of the PC configuration that would be necessary to make Lo:acs run at maximum?
(MW) Seing that Lock On has not reach the beta-stage, it is too early to provide an order of idea, because it could become rather vague from now to a few weeks.
(c6) Do you have some projects for the future add-on's of Loacs? Do you have ideas of new flyable planes and flown by AI after the release of Loacs? If not, do you think that it would be possible to get a flyable mirage 2000? If need be in co-operation between the team for Loacs and the independent developers, in the manner of Il2?
(MW) At this stage, we are only focused on the completion of Lock On and it is too early to discuss the way it's gonna go. I'm sorry.
(c6) Finally, can you give us a more precise date on the release of LOMAC/LOACS? It is possible that the "spring 2003" date is a little optimistic?
(MW)You just have to wait exit in spring 2003. Sorry, but a thousand and one thing occur (and probably will happen) between now and that date, and I cannot give you a more precise date at this time!
(C6) Thank you
Again thanks to all the team for translation (Oxitom, Sparfell and our Webmaster Lomac/Loacs HOBBY-horse, like Aj which helped it on this exclusive)
