Achtergrond
Toen het spel Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RTCW) in 2001 uitkwam werd het een groot succes. Al tijdens de demo versies (mp_beach) was het een instant multiplayer hit. Maar ook de single player was zeer goed te versmaden. Veel mensen, waaronder ik vonden het sci-fi gebeuren met die monsters een beetje over de top, maar het spel als geheel blijft gewoon te cool.
Splash Damage zou een uitbreiding maken op het originele RTCW. De titel was RTCW: Enemy Territory. Om een lang verhaal kort te maken is na verloop van tijd gedurende de ontwikkeling de stekker eruit getrokken (het schoot niet op met de SP) en is de MP van het spel als cadeau aan de community gegeven. Jaren achter elkaar domineerde dit gratis topspel de stats qua online spelgebruik. Uiteraard samen met spellen als CS, WoW, etc, maar voor zo'n oud spel is het knap.
Zo nu en dan kwamen er weer geruchten over een echte opvolger van Wolfenstein 3D en RTCW, maar een fake screenshot her en der was wel het maximale. Totdat... de E3 in 2008 er aankwam en er ineens concrete informatie kwam!
Over Wolfenstein:
1943. The Second World War is at its height. While Allied forces have stalled the expansion of Hitler's Third Reich, the Nazi war machine still has its boot on the throat of mainland Europe. However, the Führer demands nothing less than global domination. Enter Heinrich Himmler's feared Schutzstaffel (or SS) and its plan to master an occult force known only as the Black Sun. With this mysterious power source at its disposal, no army on Earth could stand in the Reich's path. No army but the man who had single-handedly shut down Himmler's Übersoldat program and thwarted the resurrection of ancient superhuman king Heinrich I, that is. Once again, the world requires the particular talents of special agent B.J. Blazkowicz.

Release date: 4 Augustus in Noord Amerika En kort daarna in Europa. Maar exacte datum is onbekend.
Opmerking: Raven Software & iD Software hebben als laatste Quake4 samen gemaakt.
* Takes place in WWII against Nazi's fully dabbling in the occult
* BJ (the hero) will also make use of supernatural powers.
* Game gives you a city in which the game takes place. Missions and quests take you through different parts. As you complete quests, more of the city opens up. Kind of a non-linear path.
* Set piece and randomly generated activity block your path.
* There is an AI resistance force that will assist you during the game at times. Think of the resistance forces in MGS4 I guess?
* You will also enter "The Shroud", an alternate reality version of the city. A dimension in which the Nazi's are drawing power from.

* MP game is different to what you see from SP footage, it is faster
* gameplay is NOT fast as ET but not as slow as cod, it is somewhere between but fast enough
* jumping is almost the same as in etqw, it is possible to go very fast
* shooting from hip is almost the same as in ET though it is noticable that the spread is a bit higher but not by much, still way less than in cod
* it is possible to sprint and shoot from hip
* ironsight is not bad at all and from what I've seen it is used mostly for long range shooting, it is harder to control it in f2f combat
* melee is done in the same way as in cod, one punch from any direction and enemy is down
* maps are approximately the same size as ET maps
* most part of gameplay is in closed areas
* gameplay types: stopwatch, capture the flag, deathmatch, last man standing, team deathmatch
* stopwatch is same as in ET, only thing I've noticed so far is that there are more objectives than in ET to do in order to complete the map
* graphic tweakings are possible and you don't have to have a monster PC in order to run the game smoothly
* there are 2 types of medics, one that has only the reviving kit and one with medipacks and ammopacks, you can't have both
* reviving takes roughly 3-4 seconds and is NOT done only with syringe, if both medics are present the reviving is faster by double
* there are no airstrikes but artillery is here
* soldier class is the most versatile one with a lot of different weapons to use
* engineer with rifle is very powerful and he can snipe same as soldier, otherwise his role is almost the same as in ET
* veil is used in MP but only in certain areas of the map and for some objectives, it's not used in the same way as in SP, sometimes it is used like UAV in cod4 and it lasts only a few sec
* it takes 2 hs or 5 bodyshots to kill someone, hitboxes are a bit weird at the moment but I guess that will be fixed
* gun sounds are very close to the ones from cod5
* flamethrower is almost the same as in cod5
This does sound very very genuine. Everything adds up with sokal's hints, wolf1337's leaks and the concept art. This guy is also from the US and has been a long time member on crossfire.nu. Tbh, if everything is true then Wolfenstein is looking pretty good. It has strafe jumping (not perfect, but I'm sure it can be tweaked) and everything else negative can be changed by a mod quite easily.
