Review of HTC Herald Pocket PC phone published
October 31, 2006 [Pocket PC phone]
HTC Herald has no 3G and still slow processor of 200 MHz speed, but is not a successor to HTC Hermes (3G Pocket PC phone with UMTS/HSDPA) but just a successor to HTC Wizard (low-end cheap Pocket PC phone). Not everybody needs 3G and fast processors, and since HTC Herald is thinner it may find many people who would be interested in it...
Some highlights about HTC Herald from this review:
* very similar overall construction as in HTC Wizard and HTC Hermes, meaning: Pocket PC phone with slide out keyboard that is sliding sideways. [our comment: apparently HTC still (on purpose) is not producing Pocket PC phones with QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage (not to anger companies like Palm and HP that order manufacturing of such phones at HTC]
* buttons for email and Internet Explorer, that are present in HTC Wizard are missing in HTC Herald
* memory card slot: microSD, not miniSD as in HTC Wizard
* mechanism of the slide-out keyboard improved
* HTC Herald has the same height and with as HTC Wizard but since it is thinner then one has impression that it is much smaller (when holding it in hand)
* built-in camera has now 2 megapixel and not 1.3 megapixel as in HTC Wizard [our comment: apparently 2 megapixel has become minimum resolution acceptable even in low-end mobile phones]
* HTC Herald is 802.11g compatible without the need to use registry hacks as it was in HTC Wizard
* Bluetooth 2.0 supported
* latest OS patch applied - HTC Herald is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 with AKU 3.2
* no infra-red port [commentary: infra-red port is being considered as low-tech and practically was replaced by Bluetooth so it is not a disadvantage that this port is missing]
* quality of the camera despite 2 megapixel resolution is poor and unlike in HTC Hermes the "macro mode switch" is missing, so taking close-up photos is not possible
* unlike it is in HTC Hermes that has smaller keyboard than HTC Wizard, the keyboard of HTC Herald is equally big as in HTC Wizard so comfort of writing with keyboard is high
* interestingly in HTC Herald the keyboard is being slided out from right side of the phone, not from the left side as it was in HTC Wizard
* mechanism of the keyboard has been greatly improved in many areas, one interesting trick: you don't have to switch the power ON - now it is enough to slide the keyboard out to switch the device ON!
* new AKU 3.2 brings fantastic new feature called "Internet sharing" in Bluetooth PAN profile, where practically the Pocket PC phone is not just a modem but becomes Bluetooth network access point (to the Internet). In other words more than one computer can use this Pocket PC phone as access point to the Internet and whole process of Internet sharing is much easier. Now it is also possible to use Internet both on the notebook and on the PDA. No longer there is a need to use Pocket PC phone just as a modem.
* the software included consists of such programs as Audio Manager, Adobe Reader, Task Manager (made by HTC), Streaming Media, Sprite Backup and Voice Recorder (made by HTC) !
