Holy shit
Never been thrilled in a survival horror like this ever before, i never played the demo so the initial village was new stuffs to me and goddamn that was fun. I just finished chapter 1.2 now, when i exited the house i started to hear a chainsaw again, the fucker ate plenty of shotgun shells but man, when they start running at you while holding it in the air, its freaky, especially with DPLII, the chainsaw's sound effects are awesome.
Graphicly, im blown away by this game and im probably only seeing the tip of the iceberg, i cant wait till its night time. Playing it on a sony grand wega 42inch LCD, using zoom to get 16:9 and i play it in progressive scan, really damn nice. The details in this game are in a league of their own. Oh and i died 5 times already haha, it can be tough, even with all the ammo i have, these bastards can be overwhelming, you never know when one will start running at you either, and the damn knife throwing dudes >_< Im often using the "shoot head -> run toward enemy -> kick" approach ala Shinji Mikami, works well, except when you're too slow to get to the enemy and find yourself WAY too close to him for my tastes, some grabbed my neck a few times.
If it goes on like this, this game will probably climb the ranks of my top 3 favorite games of all times, its so rare to see a game surpassing every expectations, redefining the genre and becoming "the" benchmark for the genre, in a way it feels a bit like when i was playing Ninja gaiden in early 2004 in some ways,
except with way more details and subtle touches in the environment or ways to build atmosphere, and as a metroid prime fan, this is pure joy.
Woei!

I've been playing non-stop for the past 4 hours and I just now took a break. This game stomps a mud hole into the ass of every other game released this gen that's so deep its not even funny.
To say that this game is intense would be a tremendous understatement. The Gamecube FINALLY has its killer ap and its THE game of this hardware generation IMO.
Totally. Bravo Capcom. I've never played a game that has exceeded its gigantic hype so much as RE 4 has. The game blows me away.
This is the best Resident Evil game ever.
This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest games I have ever played.
I say this with no qualms after about 11 hours of play, as I have encountered almost as many "wow, holy shit" moments in this time as I did in MGS3, and even then it's not fair since they both are incredible for entirely exclusive reasons not limited to their cinematics.
I'm trying to figure out a non-fanboy like way to say this, but let me qualify it a bit. One, I have almost given up on survival horror games. They just haven't done anything for me in years and with everything from tank-like controls to intrusive camera systems to "meh" scare moments, they've just lost their appeal. Forget all about that for RE4. Forget EVERYTHING about it.
I can't speak for everyone or leo, but I've literally been floored over and over again. The bosses are, without spoiling much, incredible. Sometimes they're massive hulks of beasts that you'll be scraping your jaw off the floor after the intense moments surrounding your battles. Other times they're so cleverly conceived that you'll wonder why nobody has thought them up in the past. It's all complimented by unbelievable visuals, some of the best - if not the best - this generation and a cinematic presentation that is almost unparalleled.
Technically, it's just fantastic. When you shoot a gun the game has an ingenius system that's takes a bit to get used to but then it's really second nature. It goes over your shoulder and gets real tight when you aim, and you'll always find it being helpful rather than hindering your shooting. You can't move though while shooting/aiming, which serves the heighten the fear when these creatures/people get close to you.
And speaking of creatures, what a difference alive people make. We're talking really brilliant, intelligent creations that are out for your blood, and it's so convincingly scary that you'll jump more within the first few hours of this game then you probably have in all the time you played survival horror games. Not to mention that this game ALSO delivers equal doses of incredible, intense action sequences that leave you breathless.
Finally, to compliment it all, it's the first Resident Evil story that has me captivated, every revelation leaving me on the edge of my seat wanting more. Not much has changed from a writing perspective, but it's appropriately cheesy and fits with the scary/horror movie type vibe it has with its widescreen view.
Ok, I'll talk more later or spoil things if you guys want. I hope I wasn't too gushing but boy this is just UNBELIEVABLE. If it was to end right now I couldn't possibly conceive of any other game being better this year except for Zelda, and its only January.
I think this game can be best summarized by the words "holy shit".
This is a type of game where it's hard NOT to sound like a fanboy when you're describing it. It's just so fantastic. It has defied - no shattered - all my most humble expectations, and even then it's an understatement.
It's three clicks away from me wanting to personally thank Capcom for saving the survival horror genre.
It's that good.
RE4 is definately the best Gamecube game and one of the best this generation.

Just finished a nice session of about 3 hours. This game kicks all sorts of ass. Easily the prettiest game on GCN IMO, and the sound is fantastic. I'm purposely taking my time so I can just take everything in. The level of detail is top-notch. Capcom has exceeded my expectations so far.
Wow, wow, wow!
I just spent 4 hours playing the game and let me just say that...
This game is 100% kick ass amazing! First of all, RE4 easily has the best graphics this generation of consoles. Hell, I think it's the best looking game to date. Graphics aside, the gameplay and the atmosphere are so intertwined that the designers were able to use both of them together to give a frantic, warped experience that is simply amazing.
Next to MGS3, this is the best game this generation. Do NOT miss out. It's worth 2 GameCube's
Let me be the hundreth person to say, "WOW".
I'm running the game on my 60" LCD Hitachi. Beautiful game. Surround sound Pro Logic II. Awesome. The game, damn, this game is intense. I screamed like a little girl when the chainsaw guy almost cut my head off.
People that were doubting about the game, please owe yourself to try it out at least once.
[..]this game is absolutely unparalleled. It's amazing, in all aspects and even if you saw every video leaked by every newsite, there is a lot to be seen that you haven't seen already.
First, the graphics. Simply beautiful; little details make it all the better. The first chapter takes place in the village, farm area, and some underground areas. The second one takes some of these same elements, but puts them in the dark, rain, with illumination by torches. You see water splashing on the ground; lightning flashes and lights up the screen. It's hauntingly beautiful and you can help but marvel at both the technical aspect as well as the artistic one. I'm not a graphics whore, nor do I have a widescreen TV, but this looks just amazingly pretty.
The sound is equally as intense. The villagers hiss like the zombies from 28 Days Later and yell at each other in Spanish, which is kinda freaky. The guns sound very realistic, and have distinct sounds. Meanwhile, the mere ambience of environments is great; in the caves, you'll hear water dripping and echoing, indoors you'll hear rumbling of thunder if its raining outside... it just draws you in. Take my advice and and play this with the sound cranked up, and the lights off.
The gameplay is different than any other RE game. To quote George Lucas, it's "faster and more intense." The teeming hoard that's running at you will make you clench up and you'll be running, knocking down ladders, etc. [..] It's awesome The controls are still kinda clunky, but work a lot better than they did with an overhead camera, as has been said countless times.
Which brings us to the scares. IMO, RE4 is probably scarier than the other RE's, and up there with the SH games. While previous RE's scares were based on scripted events, most of the events in RE4 that will scare you are NOT necessarily a Zombie busting through a window on cue, but what happens because of the game design itself. I was looking through my scope on my rifle, when all of a sudden a village carrying a stick of dynamite jumped right in front of me, and started hissing and trying to grab me. It scared the shit out of me, and I had to pause the game. To me, this shows remarkable game design on the part of Capcom and Mikami's team. Sure there are some old school scares in here, but it's a fresh experience, and may actually lend itself to repeated playthroughs more than the others.
If you think you'll like this game, you will LOVE this game. Right now, MGS3 is sitting pretty on my favs this gen list, but if RE4 keeps ramping up, I might have to do a slight revision.
If the RE games were made like this from it's inception, this would be one of the greatest franchises of all time
This game is incredible. 5 hours straight. Love the camera angle, love the way there's Shenmue-like real time action sequences. The first boss was amazing. I died two times before I figured out what to do but wow, definitely more exciting than ANY previous RE boss beforehand.
This game is awesome.
Holy Fuck does this game rock! It`s been a long time since a game completely blew me away but RE4 is the shit. Playing it on HDTV widescreen and it is jaw dropping. I intentional stayed away from the hype on this one but it`s all true!
Holy crap this game is insane. This is exactly what Resident Evil should play like. The new stuff in the game feels like such a natural evolution of the old games.
This game exceeds the hype by a VERY large margin.
Wow, this game is just AMAZING so far
Let me be the millionth to chime in and say HOLY CRAP
Holy. Hell.
This game is out of control. My heart has been racing on many occasions. The first big boss battle was one of the most intense parts I've ever played in a game. We were yelling "Oh sh*t, oh sh*t!" at the top of our lungs.
This game is going to make it on many people's "best ever" list. It's already on mine, and I'm only a couple hours in.
Played for a little over 4 hours last night. I had to be dragged away kicking and screaming. I am in love. The hype is true people. If this came out a few weeks ago it would easily be my GOTY 2004. EASILY. E A S I L Y.....As is stands now, the only game I foresee with any hope of being better for 2005, is the new Zelda GC.
