The thing with iPod is, that its' initial pricetag seems so interesting and all, but it's just pure marketingstrategy.
Let's try to make the new iPod 10 GB a real competitor for the iHP-100:
$ 299 initial pricing (399 Euro for European countries)
$ 39 for the remote control (49 Euro)
$ 19 for USB 2.0 cable (25 Euro)
$ 59 for extra batterypack (+8 hour playbacktime = iRiver iHP-100's playbacktime, 75 Euro)
$ 39 for protective case (49 Euro)

$ 455 (581 Euro for European costumers).
It still lacks the FM-tuner now, say that's worth at least $10. You can buy a FM-transmitter for $ 29.95, but let's leave that away since it can't be found on the iHP-100.
$ 465 (591 Euro).
We also need to add the additional costs of the iHP-100's better remotecontrol ($10) and its' optical line-in (encoding) and -out ($75).
$ 550 (676 Euro).
We deduct $ 20 for FireWire-support on the iPod, but add $ 10 for the iHP's advantage of being able to use it as "Mass-storage-device". So, $10 deduction:
$ 540 (666 Euro, evil) in total.
Compare this to the $ 415 you'll probably end up paying for the iHP-100.
Wow, really expensive to pull that kinda tricks. Well, I've got a better idea: let's compare the new iPod, 15 GB to the iHP-100!
$ 399 inital price (499 Euro already for European countries)
$ 59 for the external batterypack (8 hours is just too little)
$ 19 for the UBS 2.0 cable
=
$ 477 (599 Euro).
Somewhat better deal already! Let's deduct the costs of the dockingstation from this amount ($39.95 or 50 Euro):
$ 437.05 (549 Euro) is left. Decrease this amount of money by the extra diskspace (5 GB = about $ 80 or 90 Euro) on the 15 GB iPod.
$ 347.05 (459 Euro).
We then again add all plusses and minusses from the story above (10 GB-model), $ 85 in total:
$ 432.05 (544 Euro) in total.
Hence, the 15 GB pod is a way better deal, when compared to the iHP-100 than its' little brother pretends to be.
Both iHP-100 and iPod 15 GB are small, thin and lightweight; though the additional batterypack will make the iPod lumpier and more heavy, as well as it ruins the design (some more, hehe).
If you really want to be fair and compare the iHP-100 and the ipod, you'll have to do it like stated above. The new iPod is perfect for ppl who can live with a "minimalistic" player; the iHP-100 seems to be a better deal when it comes down to completeness.
$ 299 against $ 415 seems like an easy choice. I hope you'll understand now, why Apple was able to keep that pricetag below that of iRiver's.
If you want a good deal on iPod, I suggest you'll take the 15 GB (which should have been 20 GB in my opinion). If you're able to wait some longer in order to get more in one package, just pick the iHP-100 (goes for around $ 400~415, European pricetag unknown yet).
Houdt wel rekening met het feit, dat ik de prijzen van Apple-accesoires (voor de 10 GB-versie) in Euro's behoorlijk hoger heb ingeschat dan in Dollars (de iPod is per slot van rekening ook 100 Euro/Dollar duurder hier).
Verder zijn de plussen en minnen van de iHP-100 ook verrekend op basis van eigen inschattingen (maar die kloppen wel aardig hoor
).
Edit: aankomende topmodellen zijn weinig veranderd.
iPod 1.5 kwam ff leuk tussendoor banjeren om het hele zootje wakker te maken.
iHP-100 staat nog steeds op het punt van release (is ieg helemaal af)
Philips HDD-100 wordt ge-beta-test eind Mei/begin Juni, release zal dus wel rond September liggen.
Samsung YP900GT zal -als alles meezit- eindelijk in juni verschijnen, ook voor ons.
RCA RD2821 dient ook rond die tijd zn anonieme koppetje op te steken.
iRiver iGP-100 is volledig in nevelen gehuld, ontbrak ook op iRiver's laatste officiele presentatie. Hij komt er heus wel, datum valt echter weinig van te zeggen.
Bantam BA-1000 had er allang moeten zijn. Ik denk dat ze het hele ding aan het verbouwen zijn, nav klachten tov het ongunstige ontwerp. Zal wel gevolgd worden door nieuwe capaciteits- en prijsstellingen.
JOS MP-200HD dus ook uitgesteld (alweer) tot midden deze maand).
SonicBlue Pearl is hoogst onzeker of deze ooit het publiek zal bereiken.
Neuros 20HD komt eind dit jaar naar ons toe, en zal dan een stuk beter functioneren dan het oorspronkelijke model.
APED-serie: nix over bekend.
Creative zal voorlopig wel geen antwoord hebben op de nieuwe iPod, aangezien ze nu zelfs accesoires voor diezelfde iPod aan het bouwen zijn.

: veel plezier ermee, dit geldt ook voor JazzySOB en Fozzyxl natuurlijk. Zoals reeds gezegd: kom na een tijdje ff terug om wat objectief gebrabbel neer te poten, meestal loop je na een aantal dagen wel tegen iets aan dat "beter had gekund" of iets dat "echt superhandig blijkt te werken".
