By now, you've most likely heard the raves of peopel who can finally use the S3TC textures packaged with Unreal Tournament. Any why not? The textures noticeably improve the look of the game. Previously, they were not available to anyone except those running the S3 Metal drivers, which obviously only work with S3 cards. Now, with the work of Pangcake and Loki, you can run the S3TC textures under Linux and Windows. However, since many users have run into trouble installing them and using them under Win9x, I've written this guide which will tell you how to run the game smoothly and effectively.
First off, I'm using a GeForce2 GTS board, but all GeForce256 and GeForce2 GTS/MX users should be able to use the textures, as well as ATI Radeon users. I believe the ATI Rage128 Pro also supports the S3TC textures as well, so it may be worth a shot for you guys too. For GeForce users, driver versions 5.32 and 6.26 were tested in-house, and they both work fine. TNT2 users ask this a lot, so I'll mention it here: you can't use the textures (well, you can, but at less than 5fps). Sorry.
Now, to begin this, you must be running Unreal Tournament 402. Yes, this patch has latency problems, but for those with enough HDD space, you probably can install a second single player install, or just deal with the lag. Since most users have trouble finding patch 402, you can grab it right @ Blues News here. In addition to the patch, you will need:
Both Unreal Tournament CDs
Pangcake's UT S3TC OpenGL Driver
A Supported Video Board / Chip
Make sure you've got all the files now! Let's begin installation. First off, do a fresh install of the Unreal Tournament. Install the first CD, then install the second CD. Next, patch the game to version 402. You can install the Bonus Pack if you want to now, as well. It doesn't matter. Now, let's move to the fun stuff.
Unzip the special driver from Pangcake to a directory, and copy the included OpenGLDrv.dll file to UnrealTournament/System. Now, we need to modify the .ini. Find the UnrealTournament.ini file, which is located in UnrealTournament/System, and replace the existing OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice info in the file with this:
[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=True
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
DetailTextures=True
MinLogTextureSize=0
MaxLogTextureSize=10
MaxLogUOverV=10
MaxLogVOverU=10
UseZTrick=0
UseMultiTexture=1
UsePalette=1
DoPrecache=1
ShareLists=1
AlwaysMipmap=1
UseS3TC=1
UseModulatedGamma=1
UseGammaExtension=1
You know have enabled the S3TC texturing. Despite the fact that it says to just enter UseS3TC=1, copy all of that. If you don't, you will have white textures in some spots, and lots of corruption. All those entries fix the problems.
