Ik kwam op nvmax nog wat benchies tegen van 20.80:
This short article shows the performance of the upcoming, eagerly awaited Detonator 4 drivers. In our benchmarks shown below we tested the 20.80's against the 14.70's in both Windows ME and XP. The drivers we had are pre-release which means they will not be upto full performance. In fact, the drivers that will be released sport the 21.xx revision number and will have increased performance over our pre-release drivers.
In our tests we used 3DMark2001 to demonstrate Direct3D performance. We were unable to test OpenGL as our long living Quake 3 CD decided to knack up and the only other OpenGL application we have at the moment is Half-Life (which usually gets over 100% FPS in everything anyway). Also, we did not have the time to test Anti-Aliasing and anisotropy performance but only the shear basics as shown by the results below.
Our test bed system comprised of:
AMD Athlon 1.333GHz on 266FSB
OCZ Titan GeForce 3 (default 215MHz core and 515MHz mem
ALi Magik Mainboard
256mb OCZ PC2400 DDR memory
300w Power,
3DMark2001 was run using the default settings in all tests to keep the results fair and accurate. No components were overclocked.
Benchmarks
As you can see the results show roughly a 1000 point increase in 3DMark. This is the biggest difference between driver revisions so far. The main advantages are shown to be in the game tests whilst the nature test runs a whopping 50% faster than previous drivers. Games that take advantage of new GeForce 3 features will probably see the most benefit however older cards should also see a rise in performance.
There was no difference in visual quality in the new drivers and we had zero compatibility problems when running other games.
It is worth mentioning that these benchmarks were run on a lower performing Athlon mainboard hence the lower results for this system setup. Those with new VIA and SIS chipsets will most likely see a 1500 point jump and will probably be looking at hitting the 7000+ score. Those that purchase a nForce when available and use it with a GeForce 3 will see scores closer to 7500 or possibly even greater (we cant say until we get a board to test) due to the higher bandwidth available.
Conclusion
The Detonator 4 drivers will enhance the performance of all cards but especially those that purchased a GeForce 3. What is nice is you won't need to pay for this extra performance. The 21.xx drivers should be out soon and quite possibly will be even faster than the 20.80's - showing just how driver quality can make a bigger difference than the hardware performance. I know you are all wondering if the ATi 8500 can knock the GeForce 3 of top spot. It's going to be a real close battle as ATi have the newer hardware but NVIDIA have the better drivers. Early indications show the two devices to be level performance wise. As for me, I'm quite happy with the GeForce 3 now hitting 30 FPS in the nature test. Its dazzling stuff.
