So, there's a lot going for this game. For example, It has the best dungeons in any single player FF period. I'm shocked by how good the dungeons are in this game, full of unique environmental hazards, jump scares and beautiful sceneries. Some of them are genuinely creepy and unsettling. Love how the part comments on very specific things in every dungeons, they have tons of voiced lines, which shouldn't be surprising for a AAA RPG in 2016, but it feels really revolutionary here since it's FF.
The bros are very likeable. They're not very interesting individuals in themselves but as a team they work great. Have a very strong chemistry that's not only represented in their lines, but in basically everything in the game, from random little animations, to battle system, to camping scenes, to even the equipment menu. Huge kudos to the animation team.
The game also has one of the best bestiaries in any video game ever. Every monster is very well-done in every aspect. People already know of how great the monsters are from the demos, but I like to add that there's tons of them. TONS. Many of which weren't in any promotional material as far as I know. They make the hunts very addictive regardless of how basic they are.
It also has a fun, fluid, interesting, weird RPG/Real time hybrid battle system that many people will hate because they expected DMC.
So yeah, the game has a lot going for it, and for what it's worth, this's the most I enjoyed final fantasy since IX.
But as Inuhanyou mentioned earlier, the game is frankensteinish. It's not well put together. It needed more time in the oven, or better, it needed to throw all the versus package and start on a clean slate. The plot, at least in the first 8 chapters, is a hot mess.
And it's a fucking shame because I find the characters very likeable, and the world intriguing, but the game completely falls apart tonally. I'm sorry but the happy road-trip side doesn't work at all with the "my father god murdered and I will avenge" side at all. It's pretty jarring when Iris flirts and throw jokes with me when she's supposed to be completely traumatized by the destruction of her city and the murder of her father. It just don't work.
Also, there's very, very, very, very little story in the chapters I played. The last two chapters I played, while were the peaks of my playtime, game-play wise, were also basically a filler arc. The game is not subtle at all in its efforts to keep me away from the next story beat, so I hope it's something substantial. Till now, there's no story in the game beyond the basic premise that we've known for more than 8 years now.
Most of the cutscenes feels like a PSP game cutscenes. They're clearly rushed, and not well-directed.
Some of the recently rewritten lines don't have it's appropriate subtitles in the game yet. For example, the new Prompto line that replaced "WE'LL PLAY HIDE AND SEEK WITH HIM".
Side-quests are mostly Xenoblad-y, but that was to be expected. There's some legitimately great side-content though, in form of dungeons, hunts, and optional bosses.
So, yeah, that's my take on the game for now. It's a very good game, great even. I'm having a blast. Dethroned Dark Souls III as my game of the year. It has best dungeons in the series, great combat, fantastic monster gallery, beautiful world to explore, likeable characters, and phenomenal music. I just hope the story ramps up in the next act, because at the moment, it's a rushed, filler-y, badly presented mess.
