There are a few things that can cause installation issues with Diablo II on a Mac.
First, if you are using the discs to install the game, please make sure you have downloaded and are using the latest installer from our website available at
http://www.blizzard.com/patches
Next, if the disc is automatically ejected by your Mac. It is possible that the Diablo II installation disc is damaged or are too old to be read by your Mac. If that is the case and you have a connection to the internet, we do have a quick solution:
- go to
http://www.blizzard.com/store web site
- register yourself and the game, and download the latest installer, for free. (You won't need to use a CD to install or play the game, from this point on.)
- after you input the CD-key to register the game, make sure to see if it has changed to a longer number, some old cd-keys are no longer useful and will be automatically converted in the registration section
If that doesn't help, please make sure that you try the following steps:
Step 1:
- log in with an Administrator account for Mac OS X
- delete the preferences file for Diablo II in your Macintosh HD => Users => ( your account ) => Library => Preferences folder
Some files may not appear, please delete those that match the ones above.
Step 2:
Close all applications:
Make sure ALL other applications other than the Dock and the Finder are closed.
There may also be processes running on the system which interfere with normal game installation.
- Norton security software : please uninstall
- Time Machine : please turn off when doing any type of install
Step 3:
Turn off screen savers:
Make sure Energy Saver and Screen Saver preferences in the System Preferences application are disabled.
Step 4:
Make a disk image:
With Mac OS X, it is possible to use the Disk Copy application to make a read only image of the Diablo II CD. This can help in cases where the installer does not run properly from the CD itself.
To make a disk image, use the following set of steps:
- Insert the Diablo II CD in your drive.
- Right click on the CD and select: Duplicate
Eject the CD and use the disc image on the desktop
Step 5:
Permissions can become corrupted when installing OS updates or by upgrading your OS X version or downloading files from the internet. Please use the steps below to repair these permissions:
- In the Finder go to the Macintosh HD => Applications => Utilities folder
- In Utilities, open Disk Utility
- Select Macintosh HD volume that Diablo II is installed to
- Ensure that First Aid is the option chosen
- Click Repair Disk Permissions (repair disk permissions until there are no errors listed)
- Click Repair Disk Permissions to verify that any
- Reboot the system before attempting to install the game
Step 6:
Corrupted hard drive directory:
It is possible that the hard drive's directory has become corrupted so please do the following in order to correct this, however please be advised that only major issues will be listed during this process and are designated by not having the two asterisks * * in front of the line. Minor errors will not be mentioned.
Step 7:
Repair Directory Procedure:
1. (re)start the computer
2. right after the computer starts press command (Apple) +"s" until you get a black screen with white type
3. let go of the keys when this screen comes up
4. at the cursor please type the following: "fsck -f -y" and press return (make sure to include the spaces)
5. please be aware that some of the procedures will look like they are frozen, but are actually taking a long time to work i.e checking hierarchy
6. if anything had to be repaired, repeat step 4
7. once things are repaired type "exit" and press return
8. computer will boot into Mac OS
9. please try to install the game after the Mac OS system is loaded
Step 8:
If the above procedures did not correct the issue, it may be memory related. Diablo II will utilize as much memory as is available. Many systems that are using memory that is not matched to the manufacturer installed modules may need to remove the additional RAM in order for Diablo II to install or update properly. To test the memory that is installed in the Mac, please boot the Mac using the Apple Hardware Test and running the "Extended" test.
You will need to have the original disc your computer was shipped with mounted in the drive. Hold down the "D" key while rebooting to get into the Apple Hardware Test from the choices. If you don't have an Intel-based Mac, you'll need to hold down "Option" while booting to get to the Startup Manager. Then you can choose the AHT from the options there.
We recommend an extended test of all hardware, looping if that's possible. That will let us know for sure if there are any hardware problems. If it reports any hardware issues, you'll want to contact a local Apple Service Provider to address those.
Step 9:
If the steps listed have not aided in the installation or updating of Diablo II, please use the information below to send an Apple System Profile of the system experiencing difficulty. Please email the file to our Mac Support Team directly at macsupport@blizzard.com. One of our Mac Specialists will contact you back for further troubleshooting assistance.
To create an Apple System Profile report:
Go to the Apple menu => About this Mac => More Info... (button) => File menu => Save As... ( use System Profiler (XML) version, only )
