Taipei, Taiwan; March 14, 2005 – ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), a leading provider of high-performance notebook computers, today introduced the Zero Bright Dot Policy in three models including the W1, V6 and M6 notebook series.
Dead pixels on LCD (liquid crystal display) have been a common issue that cannot be repaired and defective panels are expensive to replace. With ambiguous warranty policies from most of the popular brands, most users have to compromise with a number of bothersome defects on their displays. ASUS is the first to stand out and make a promise to users worldwide that guarantees LCD panels with zero bright dots in the three notebook models. Even if only one bright dot is found, a free panel exchange is guaranteed within 30 days of original purchase.*
*The original purchase invoice , including purchase receipt or other proof of purchase, must be presented to claim for an exchange. For more information, please visit the company website:
www.asus.com .
What are bright dots (non-performing dead pixels)?
LCD is made up of pixels and each pixel is made up of three sub-pixel color valves of red, blue and green. The valves in each color either impedes or transmits the light source and by adjusting the amount of light passed through, each pixel displays a distinctive color that ultimately makes up the images shown on the screen. A dead pixel refers to a pixel with a defect in its ability to display the correct color output. When the defective pixel remains permanently lit, it is known as a bright dot and bright dots appear as a white or colored spots (except black) against a black background.
What can be done?
Dead pixels cannot be fixed after display assembly, which means non-performing pixels cannot be repaired and the only solution is to replace the LCD panel. However, LCD manufacturers have set limits as to how many bright dots are considered tolerable for a given panel based on the industry standard and manufacturing cost to provide users with a general guideline. Therefore, users often have no choice but to put up with defective displays when the number of dead pixels found is within the tolerance level. Depending on the manufacturer's warranty policy, a panel exchange may not be guaranteed even if the dead pixel count exceeds the industrial tolerance standard.
