Earth is under siege by an alien race. The Strogg are cybernetic warriors -- a mechanical frame and decaying body parts stabilized by flesh consumed in a systematic annihilation of other species and civilizations. In a desperate attempt to survive a Strogg attack on Earth, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. Earth's initial assault force is nearly annihilated immediately, but one marine manages to infiltrate the base, bring down their planetary defense systems, and kill the Strogg's collective brain and leader -- the Makron. Earth assumed the destruction of the Makron would end it all, but it didn't. That's where QUAKE II leaves off and QUAKE 4 begins. The Strogg are quickly regrouping. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earth's next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds. The Gauntlet ![]() The melee weapon from Quake 3 returns, and the team went through many different concepts before arriving at a final design -- you can see the final version in the bottom pic. When you've thoroughly beat your opponent into embarassment, there's no better humilation than a final gauntlet kill. Blaster ![]() This is the standard Marine-issue energy pistol, with two different modes of fire. Press the Attack key to quickly fire smaller blasts. Fire a stronger blast by holding down the Attack key briefly and charging up, and then releasing it to fire. A lit panel on the back of the weapon indicates a full charge. Powered by nuclear batteries, the blaster never runs out of ammo. In addition, there's an under-barrel-mounted flashlight for use in dark areas. Machinegun ![]() Combining fully automatic fire and a single-shot scoped mode, the machinegun is a versatile weapon. It holds 40 rounds in the clip, and, like the blaster, it includes an under-barrel flashlight. When zoomed in, rapidly pressing the attack key to get off a series of shots can prove extremely effective. Shotgun ![]() With an eight-round internal magazine, the shotgun is exactly what you'd expect: excellent for close-range combat, but less useful against targets at medium or long ranges. In the single-player campaign, most of the weapons will receive modifications by helpful Marine technicians. Some will work automatically, like a rate-of-fire increase, while pressing the Zoom/Weapon Special key activates other modifications. In the case of the shotgun, weapon mods included an extended clip as well as automatic fire, as opposed to pump action. Railgun ![]() It just wouldn't feel like Quake any more without a proper railgun, and here it is. This model is actually a smaller design than the Quake 2 and Quake 3 variants, but still serves the same purpose: to put a hole clean through anyone standing in your way. Upgrades allow for increased rate of fire, increased accuracy, increased damage, and increased capacity. Nailgun ![]() The nailgun was introduced in the original Quake, and then returned in the Quake 3 expansion pack, Team Arena. This new Strogg nailgun operates a little different from its two predecessors, however; there's a brief windup time before unleashing a stream of nails at anyone unfortunate enough to be in its path. In some ways, it's closer to the Quake 2 chaingun than any other weapon in the series. |
