Prepare for Deployment
Posted: August 14, 2004 - by Bacchus
As fall approaches, the America's Army Community should prepare for an onslaught of new content!
"NAME THE NEXT SOFTWARE VERSION" CONTEST:
That's right! We've got a new version of AA around the corner and we're looking to the America's Army Community to suggest a name for it. Previous versions of our game always have a name and theme associated with it (e.g. America's Army: Special Forces Downrange). Well now you can help us name the next version (e.g. AA:SF <fill in the blank>).We've created a special forum topic area for everyone to submit their ideas. The winners will be announced there in the forum topic. And don't post your contact info! We'll contact the winners via the information in your profile.

The question you've all been waiting for: what's going to be in America's Army v2.2? Take a look:
• New Multiplayer Map: SF Taiga
• New Multiplayer Map: SF Oasis
• Fixing "ROE" URL on support page and new-map URL
• Disable "set" command for non-config variables
• Fix spinny weapon freezing on level change
• Fix Auth Failure messages that have a URL
• Added "Invalid Group" failure message
• Save Group information to savefile
• Notify the player before joining a server that has Group restrictions
• Various game crash fixes
Ready to start suggesting names for America's Army v2.2?
America's Army v2.2 is tentatively scheduled for release within the next several weeks.
SERVER PATCH RELEASE:
The Public Applications team and SCI have been working together to address Community concerns related to several recent exploits, improve server stability, and to introduce map rotations. The server patch will include the following:
• Remove "query" exploit
• Add icon for third party official servers
• Add option to restrict server access by groups
• Add groups field to server info
• Fixed Admin spectate command
• Memory Leak fixes
• Admins can join Min/Max Honor servers
• Admin text is displayed as red
• Disable player color codes
• Fixed Punkbuster admin commands
• Allow normal user to be admins on Leased servers
The great news is that the server patch is almost ready for deployment! Additionally, America's Army players do not have to make any changes to their installed version. (Now what was that about 'third party official servers'? Hmmm....)
FUTURE APPLICATIONS (AAFA) SITREP:
In May 2004, we expanded the America's Army development team to two new locations. One of those is at the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny, NJ (a.k.a. ARDEC). The team, which previously worked in military force-on-force simulation, is dedicated to using AA in Research, Development and Training. In this SITREP, we wanted to give you a look at what developments are emerging from the Future Applications studio.
XM25:
The Future Applications team has been working on implementing the XM25 Air Burst Assault Weapon into America's Army.
The XM25 is a future weapon system that allows the highly accurate placement of airbursting grenades using a state-of-the-art computer fire control system. Instead of the grenade exploding on impact, it determines how long it's been flying and can explode while airborne. Whereas the M203 relies upon a leaf sight, the XM25 uses a laser rangefinder to acquire range.

Despite the obvious advantage of precision fire control, the air burst feature allows the user to attack opponents in hard to reach places. If the enemy is hiding behind a wall, the XM25 user lases the wall, increases the range a meter beyond, and fires. The XM25 is but one of the future weapon systems you'll see in upcoming versions of AA, thanks to ARDEC!
TALON Robot:
Another example of future technology you'll see in AA is the TALON robot. TALON is an all-terrain, all-weather, radio-controlled robot. The TALON robot has a single arm with a two-fingered gripper, and includes 4 on-board cameras to aid in remote control. TALON supports the Global War on Terror and is currently used in Iraq and Afghanistan to destroy explosive devices. In fact, TALON was also deployed by Picatinny Soldiers during search and rescue operations at the World Trade Center in the days following 9/11.
JAVELIN Rocket Launcher:
AAFA is also developing the Javelin Missile system for release in a future release of America's Army. The Javelin is a man-portable, shoulder-fired missile that comes in two parts: the disposable tube that holds the missile, and the reusable Command Launch Unit (CLU). It is primarily an anti-vehicle weapon, but can be used on other targets as well. While looking through the CLU, the operator can choose one of three views: 4x zoom, 4x thermal zoom, and 9x thermal zoom. The Javelin is a fire-and-forget weapon, so a Soldier can fire it and move to a new position before the enemy even realizes that he is under attack.
Check back here for new SITREP's - we strive to update every other Saturday.
