L.A. Noire

Character dossier
Coroner Carruthers A key contact at the morgue providing often crucial information for solving a case.

Marlon Hopgood When a very curious item is found at the scene of a suspicious car accident, the odd prop leads to The Silver Screen Prop Store run by Marlon Hopgood.

Stefan Bekowsky The young, jocular Traffic desk detective, Stefan Bekowsky, is highly regarded around the department for his sharp mind, reliability and dedication. Bekowsky proves to be a loyal friend and partner to Phelps as they pursue a string of intriguing cases.

Candy Edwards In the Vice desk case, "The Set-Up", boxer Albert Hammond winds up winning a fixed fight he was meant to lose - costing his manager and a rogues' gallery of illegal bookies a fortune. When he mysteriously disappears following the fight, one of the first people sought for information is his galpal Candy Edwards. When it seems she knows more than she's letting on, the mystery thickens. What's her real relationship with Hammond? Is she in collusion with the manager or any other crossed parties? What's with the suitcase - in a hurry to leave town?

Mikey Cohen Mikey Cohen is a powerful member of an organized crime syndicate spanning from Los Angeles to Chicago all the way back to his hometown of New York City.Always flanked by his right-hand man and bodyguard, Johnny Stompanato, Cohen is alleged to be the top kingpin of all the gangsters in LA, with a hand in the trade of everything from narcotics, to illegal weapons, to gambling - you name it. If the investigation of a case seems to lead to Cohen's operation, watch out, and know who you're messing with. Things are going to get dangerous.

Captain Donnelly Irish-born LAPD career veteran, Captain James Donnelly, is both respected and feared throughout the department as the pragmatic, no-nonsense Officer-in-Charge of the Homicide desk. Donnelly provides briefings and debriefings to Phelps and the other desk detectives as they work all manner of murder cases across LA. Less concerned with the letter of the law and more concerned with hard results, he's known to push a bareknuckle enforcer's demand for confessions and convictions. Careers are made and broken on Captain Donnelly's word.

Fred Nicholson When a devastating explosion at the Nicholson Electroplating plant rocks downtown Los Angeles, causing damage for blocks around and tragic innocent casualties, one of the first persons of interest to be interviewed is the plant's owner, Fred Nicholson. Will shrewd questioning reveal him to be a shocked and grief-riddled man, beside himself over the death and destruction that emanated from his factory? A cold and calculating businessman only mindful of the impact to his interests? Or someone with more to hide? What can he reveal that may lead to the truth behind this disaster?

Crime desk: traffic
Contrary to what some might think, detectives working the traffic desk don't spend much time sorting out parking tickets and moving violations.
The Traffic crime desk detective unit investigates hit-and-run cases, vehicular manslaughter and murder cases, and collision reports involving serious injuries or fatalities where a crime may be involved.
As Cole Phelps first gets promoted to detective, he is assigned to Traffic - very quickly discovering a dark world where automobiles are used as instruments of murder, deception and violent crime. Reporting to the scene of a mysterious abandoned bloody vehicle, or - for example in "The Fallen Idol" case, to an apparent accident site where witness accounts just don't add up - odd clues and flimsy personal accounts may lead to a far more sinister truth.

Crime desk: homicide
As Detective Cole Phelps, you'll rise through the ranks of the LAPD, along the way facing cases across a range of department crime desks. One of the most brutal and harrowing will of course be that of Homicide.
Los Angeles is being terrorized with a series of horrific murders perpetrated on young women. Is this the work of a lone killer or sick copycats? As these cases get reported, it will be up to you to bring the killer or killers to justice.
"The Silk Stocking Murder" is just one of many crimes you'll face while working the Homicide desk.

Crime desk: patrol
Starting out as an LAPD officer means following in the footsteps of so many lawmen before you – literally. Walking the beat and cruising your precinct’s area as an officer on patrol is both how you pay your dues in the police department as well as a time-honored means of honing your skills and intuition to protect and serve. Before you can move up from a uniformed policeman to the suited attire of a crime desk detective working cases, you will have to prove your worth to the higher-ups on the force with some stellar policework on patrol.
As Cole Phelps, working alongside your partner Officer Ralph Dunn, you’ll soon find that a day on patrol in 1947 Los Angeles is anything but routine. Be prepared for anything, and ready to spring into action when those calls come in.
Two of the crimes you’ll face while working in uniform include a violent incident of armed robbery and a gunshot victim homicide.

Crime desk: vice
Vice is a desk that can replace any officer’s wide-eyed optimism - with hardened cynicism - in no time at all.
LAPD Vice detectives plunge themselves down into the seedy underbelly of LA, overturning the most decrepit of stones to expose the city's dregs, druggies, pimps, pushers, prostitutes, bootleggers, bookies, mob lords, thugs and gangsters. Working these cases will defy your worst and lowest expectations of humanity.
Cole Phelps 'graduates' to this department following a harrowing stint investigating murders on the Homicide desk, to find that things can indeed get even more vicious in LA. Among the crimes Phelps and his Vice partner Roy Earle will face are illicit gambling activity, the case of a missing boxer, and an investigation into the latest casualties in the dope scourge plaguing the city.
Crime desk: arson
All it can take is a simple strike of a match – and an entire home, building, city block… livelihoods and lives can be destroyed forever.
Scary enough that such danger can teeter on an accidental mishap like a kitchen grease fire, or a misplaced candle... But terrifying when at the hands of an arsonist who creates this devastation with intent.
After LA's bravest have fought and quelled a fire – if the responding fire chief determines any cause for suspicion, the LAPD Arson Crime Desk is alerted and its detectives go to work meticulously examining the scene for clues.
As Detective Cole Phelps working the Arson desk, you will see firsthand the charred ruins, scorched corpses and anguished survivors that are the victims of this most heinous of crimes.

Soundtrack
Jazz reigned as America's most popular form of musical entertainment in the 1940s and was at its apex of creative innovation, from the emergence of Bebop to the revitalization of Dixieland. The in-game soundtrack of L.A. Noire steps into this era of rich musical history and accompanies each vivid environment with its sonic match. The music of L.A. Noire features a dramatic original score that supports Cole Phelps through each crime scene, interrogation, and car chase – along with classic licensed standards from the period and newly produced original vocal recordings to complete the musical experience and bring auditory authenticity into the world of L.A. Noire's 1947 Los Angeles.
The score of L.A. Noire plays a critical role in the game, as musical cues help notify Cole Phelps where additional clues can be found and when he has exhausted the investigation of a crime scene. Both are subtle features that can prove very helpful while on the case.
Inspired by the sweeping orchestral scores from the great films of the 1940s, L.A. Noire's original score was composed by Andrew Hale, songwriter and keyboardist for the band Sade, and the Jazz-Funk band Sweetback, and was recorded in the same Abbey Road Studios that are credited for the innovative recording techniques adopted by The Beatles, and Pink Floyd.
The L.A. Noire Official Soundtrack release will be available at digital music stores on May 17th, featuring instrumental and vocal tracks from the game's soundtrack by Andrew Hale, Claudia Brucken, and Woody Jackson.

Reviews

On the eve of L.A. Noire's North American launch (coming to Europe and Australia this Friday), we present some of the very first reviews to hit today...
"L.A. Noire is a bold release, because it defies the expectations not just for the type of game Rockstar usually releases, but also for the type of game that receives this degree of care and proficiency in its execution." - Giant Bomb: 5/5http://www.giantbomb.com/la-noire/61-21500/reviews/
"This is vastly different from the countless first- and third-person shooters and all the 'me too' open-world games sitting on store shelves. All the things I've only read about in Dashiell Hammett novels, or seen in film classics like Double Indemnity, have all come to interactive life in L.A. Noire. Team Bondi has gone to great lengths to wrap you up in the game's story, and from my experience they've succeeded. I investigated these crimes. I apprehended the suspects. I pieced together all the clues. L.A. Noire had me more involved in its first thirty minutes than some other games do in their entirety, and that makes this a game you may regret passing on. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your gaming life." - 1UP: Ahttp://www.1up.com/reviews/la-noire-review
"Ever since it worked out how to assemble pixels so that they resembled something more recognisable than aliens, the games industry has dreamed of one thing above all else - a game that is indistinguishable from a film, except that you can control the lead character. With L.A. Noire, it just might, finally, have found the embodiment of that particular holy grail." - The Guardian: 5/5 Stars
http://www.guardian.co.uk...y/16/la-noire-game-review
"L.A. Noire approaches the dichotomy of interaction and narrative by integrating them together inextricably... Each element of the game is so intertwined with the other that it takes some time to realize the subversive genius on display; the story is the game, the game is the story... L.A. Noire transcends genre and the expectations of what a game can be and casts a spell that I have yet to shake." - G4: 5/5

"L.A. Noire is a game that needed making. It offers something truly unique in an unbeatable setting... a breath of fresh air in an otherwise increasingly stale industry." - NowGamer: 9.3/10
http://ps3.nowgamer.com/reviews/ps3/9811/la-noire
"What a marvellous advert L.A. Noire can be for the eclecticism of video games, taking familiar mechanics that have been honed down the years and moulding them into an ambitious drama of exceptional impact... on the strength of this case, I can only hope the rest of the industry follows LA Noire’s lead." - The Telegraph: 9/10
http://www.telegraph.co.u...6469/LA-Noire-review.html
"L.A. Noire is a unique game with a terrific sense of period atmosphere, absorbing investigation mechanics, and a haunting tale with plenty of moments that would be right at home in a classic film noir." - Gamespot: 9/10 http://www.gamespot.com/p...ten%3Ballscore%3B1&page=1
Asked & Answered

“What is the official release date for LA Noire?” - received via Twitter
“Nice to know the dates of release but what about a date for Australia?” - Tommy_Spaghetti
As confirmed officially recently, L.A. Noire will be coming to stores for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 17th 2011 in North America and May 20th 2011 in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. If you’re in another territory not covered in the above and would like to know when to expect the release of the game, drop us a line at mouthoff@rockstargames.com and we should be able to confirm the release availability for you.
“Hey Rockstar love the new LA Noire trailer! So you’re tracking down a serial killer the whole game?? Can’t wait to find out more!” - received via Mouthoff
Thanks! And actually the serial killer crimes are really just one portion of the game story. You are hot on the trail of that killer while working the Homicide crime desk, which is just one of five total crime desks Cole Phelps will work.
“@R* is there multiplayer in L.A. Noire? or just single player?” - ghostcheez
There will be no multiplayer component of L.A. Noire – the combination of innovative technology and unique gameplay that allow you to solve crimes through interrogations and investigation is really one that’s geared entirely for a single-player experience. Trust us that this is a game unlike any you’ve played before – very different not only for us here at Rockstar but for videogames as a medium. Bolting on generic multiplayer on top of that would not make much sense, or be a good use of our time or development budget! Hope this clears up any confusion. We thought this would be spelt out in some of last week's previews, but as it wasn't, we felt we should clarify ourselves.
“Hi R*. We heard about interrogations and analyzing a crime scene in L.A. Noire but what about follow a suspect on foot and in car, gathering information from informants, tap a phone call, milk a conversation? ....could be nice to hear more about gameplay.” - realrasta
Glad to see you’re getting into the spirit of it all – and yes, many of those things (but not all) and more will be part of the gameplay of L.A. Noire. From investigating crime scenes with a keen detective’s eye, to tense interrogations where you’ll have to pick up on nuances of what the suspect may (or may not) be telling you, to action-packed pursuit on foot, in car – plus fights and shootouts. We really wanted the game to make you feel like you are actually a detective, working criminal cases and making decisions about how you solve crimes and to build out a variety of gameplay moments and experiences to that effect. Look for a special new gameplay video about this subject called "Investigation and Interrogation" dropping this week.
“So, will I be able to choose from a wide range of questions when interrogating a suspect?” - The4ourTy67
“I'm guessing you get to choose from different questions/responses to ask your witness or suspect? Can these interrogations change the course of the game/story if not handled properly? Personally this aspect of the game is the most exciting for me. Nothing beats a good Noire mystery, I really hope that the cases take some serious effort to solve.” - IWIHooligan
You will always be given a range of questions when you interrogate a suspect, but the number and content of those questions is determined by how efficient you’ve been at searching related crime scenes for clues. The clues you discover can open up different leads to new locations or suspects, which in turn open up new options for a player to decide how to go about solving a case. Then during interrogations, it’s up to the player to correctly analyze a suspect in order to get the most information from them. Knowing when to believe a suspect, when to doubt them, and when to be certain they are lying (by presenting them with your evidence) will open up new ways for you to solve each case correctly. In every case, there is only one real truth about what happened - it’s up to your skill as a detective to discover it.
"All of those pre-order bonuses sound awesome but is there any way to get all of them? Hate to have to choose just one." - received via Mouthoff
All of the L.A. Noire pre-order content will be made available for purchase as DLC at some point after the game comes out. We have long planned to do this for all digital pre-order items. In case you’re interested, the Red Dead Redemption pre-order items (Deadly Assassin Outfit, Golden Guns Weapon Pack and War Horse) will finally be available for download via Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network this April. Apologies that has taken so long, but we ran into some technical issues. Stay tuned for more details.
“R*, will we be able to see the Hollywood sign in L.A. Noire???” - rk8000
Yes, however since the game takes place prior to the year 1949, we have the historically accurate original version “HOLLYWOODLAND” sign in there. You can read the full history of that iconic landmark at the Hollywood Sign wiki page here, but in short – the sign was originally erected in 1923 to promote the Hollywoodland housing development in the hills. It wasn’t until 1949 that the city of Los Angeles decreed that the sign be changed to be broadly about the district of Hollywood.
“So are we playing as a police detective or a private investigator in L.A. Noire?” - ghostx1984
You will play as LAPD detective Cole Phelps – and as the game progresses and you solve more cases, you will rise up through the ranks of the LAPD from a beat cop to other positions. Much more will be revealed about that in due time.
“Is this going to be a sandbox game? If yes, is it going to be GTA style or more like Mafia where it's really more of a set story game in sandbox world...” - MarenkaS
L.A. Noire is a detective game – and it is unlike any game we have made or anyone else has made that we are aware of. You solve a series of crimes, some of which are linked and some of which are not, in 1947 Los Angeles. As a company, we try to design games around the content and setting, rather than form the setting to the game design. So the answer to your question is not a simple yes or no, but it’s definitely not ‘GTA with fedoras’ and is something very original we’re excited for everyone to experience this May.
“Is the music in the L.A. Noire trailer original to the game?” - received via Twitter
The music in both trailers are pieces of original composition from the soundtrack – we will have full details on all of the music soon.
“I really like that L.A. Noire artwork [of Cole Phelps]. Are you going to release more artwork soon?” - The4ourTy67
Thanks! And most definitely. Look for lots more original L.A. Noire artwork of characters from the game as well as of some of the grisly crime scenes in the game to be revealed and released in the weeks and months ahead.
“[L.A. Noire] looks really great!!!! So the real murders and crimes of the 40's like the Black Dahlia murder are gonna be in this game or something??? I read something on Game Informer that says "suffice it to say that this game might feature some of Rockstar’s grittiest content ever." Well this sound's more and more awesome!!!!!!!!” - Mortal91ify
Thank you. Yes, all of the cases in the game that you’ll solve as Detective Cole Phelps are inspired by real life crimes that happened during the 1940’s. Names and places may have been changed though, along with a good degree of creative embellishment to add extra drama and twists and turns.
