Ik heb na overleg met Sandalf besloten om deze topic te openen, die weer eens iets heel anders gaat zijn. Het idee is om steeds een stukje van Nietzsche's "Also sprach Zarathustra" te lezen, en daar dan over te discussieren. Waarom dit boek? Een aantal redenen. Het staat op het net, in het Engels, en wel op http://users.compaqnet.be/cn127103/ (is een frames-pagina, dus even doorklikken totdat je er bent). Ik heb een "Study Guide" voor het eerste stuk, die denk ik erg handig kan zijn voor het opstarten van de discussie. Je hoeft niet heel veel voorkennis te hebben om mee te discussieren. Het is mijn favoriete filosoof. Het is een boek dat soms meer op een mystiek gedicht dan op een filosfisch werk lijkt, wat er voor zorgt dat er veel ruimte voor discussie is. Het is zeer divers. Genoeg redenen om het te kiezen lijkt mij. Het enige nadeel is dat sommige dingen misschien wat lastiger te volgen zijn als je de filosofie van Nietzsche niet kent, maar dat komt wel goed als je je een tijdje met de topic bezig houdt.
Dus als je zin hebt: doe vooral mee! Ik zal iedere paar dagen een nieuw stukje posten, en zolang ik ze nog heb ook de vragen uit de "Study Guide". Als eerste stukje post ik nu de twee eerste paragrafen van de Prologue.

Much of the imagery here is probably borrowed from "The Allegory of the Cave" in Plato's Republic. Plato says that an enlightened thinker is like a man who gradually struggles free of the chains of illusion in an underground cave and who learns by ascending to the world above and viewing things in the light of day, finally discovering the essence of truth by gazing at the sun itself. Nietzsche is fond of self-quotation. Here Zarathustra is amazed that the Old Man has not heard of one of Nietzsche's most famous pronouncements: ²God is Dead." This is probably the most widely-quoted and thoroughly misunderstood of all Nietzsche's sayings. He does not mean to imply that God was ever alive. A clearer statement (though less dramatic) would be: "That period in history during which the idea of the Christian God expressed the highest ideals of Western Civilization has passed, and it is now clear that belief in him is a dead burden on a society which has outgrown him." What changes in European culture might have led him to this conclusion? Have you ever heard someone argue against his statement that God is dead? Did their arguments demonstrate knowledge of what Nietzsche was actually saying?
