F.A.Q | |
Overview What is Pirates of the Burning Sea (PBS)? A new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) of adventure on the high seas. When is it coming out? This winter. You mean I can't play by dial-up modem? / Why do I need broadband? We're delivering the game entirely online, and downloading hundreds of megabytes of files over dial-up would be painful. Can I sign up for a beta? We are not currently accepting signups for the beta. Keep visiting this site for more information on the beta process. When does the beta start? We aren't ready to announce any dates for the beta test. As soon as we do, you'll see it all over our home page. How many players does the game support? Each server/world will host thousands of players, but further testing is required before we have a more specific figure. What does it cost? We have not yet decided our pricing structure, but it will be comparable to other games in the genre. Who is the publisher? We are financing and publishing Pirates of the Burning Sea ourselves. How will the game be distributed? We are using Valve's new Steam technology to distribute the game entirely online. There will be no retail box in stores. Steam handles purchasing, subscriptions, logins, progressive content downloads, and upgrades. Go to www.steampowered.com for more information. Will there be versions for other platforms? None are currently planned. What graphics engine are you using for the game? We are using Activision's Alchemy engine. I keep seeing "R1" referred to on the forums. What does it mean? It stands for "Release One", the initial release of the game. Future downloadable releases (R2, R3, etc.) will add new features and content, and will come out every few months. Can I alt-tab out of the game? Absolutely. Gameplay Do I have to play a pirate? No. Pirates of the Burning Sea will have a variety of professions available. You can be a naval captain, battling enemy navies and pirates, or you can make your own destiny as an adventurer, cutting deals for valuable cargo, sneaking through blockades in the dark of night, and capturing enemy ships for rich rewards. Do you allow PvP? Absolutely. PBS is a game about a tumultuous and violent period of history. Players will be fighting all over the game world in major battles and random encounters alike. How big is your world? The entire Caribbean, including portions of the continental coastlines of North America, Central America, and South America. Can my character die? There is no permadeath, nor is there an XP penalty. We believe rewarding success is better than penalizing failure. Can I have my own ship? Yes, you will have your own ship to command at all times. Will there be weather? We have variable wind, and each type of ship responds differently to the wind. We're not including rain and storms in R1, but they will be added to the game over time. Can I make items? In R1 you can create your own flag and sail graphics. Here on our website you'll find our innovative peer-reviewed player content submission system, through which you can submit your flag and sail designs for other players to vote on. The best ones go into the game, where you can use them on your ship and sell copies of them to other sea captains. In future releases we'll be looking at ways to expand the player-created art in our game, and we'll investigate what in-game crafting options would be the most fun. Can I make ships? All of the basic ships in the game can be extensively customized and modified with pieces of ship outfitting - triple-threaded sails that are more resistant to damage, extra planking on the hull for more protection, and much more. Can I have a house? There won't be player-owned locations in R1, but it is an important part of MMP gaming and we intend to add this feature in the future. How historically accurate is the game world? PBS is set in the Caribbean in the early 1700's. Technology and politics are pretty much as they were at that point in the real world, though we're taking a few liberties here and there in the interests of ship and weapon diversity. But politics and history will diverge from the real world pretty quickly, as wars break out and national fortunes rise and fall on the basis of player actions. So while we're launching from a near-historical point, the players and the world will take some very different turns. Why the 18th Century? We chose the early 1700s to start with because both the politics and the technology are more interesting. England, France and Spain are constantly at war, but none of have yet emerged as the dominant power, and piracy is in it's Golden Age, when famous pirates like Blackbeard, 'Calico Jack' Rackham and Bartholomew Roberts terrorized the high seas, made off with mountains of stolen swag, and became legends in their own time. Is there magic in the game? No. There are none of the spells, magic wands, +3 helmets, or any of that stuff you may have seen in other MMORPGs. Pirates and sailors do have all kinds of superstitions and ghost stories about life at sea, and we may explore those in the game, but we're not going to do anything that you'd consider magic as offered in fantasy games like World of Warcraft or Everquest. What social organizations are there? Join Britain, France or Spain, and all the other citizens become your comrades in arms. And of course, player can create their own guilds for other players to join, so that groups of friends can always find each other and sail together. What happens to my character and stuff when I log off? When you log off, there is a countdown before you leave the game that can be interrupted if you are attacked. Once the countdown ends, your ship leaves the world wherever it is. If you have to quit immediately or if you lose your connection, we start this countdown automatically and take your ship out of the world as soon as it is completed. Logging off in the middle of combat could result in your ship being sunk after you leave. What about players who are not living in the U.S.A.? Can they play? We intend to allow all users access to the U.S. game servers. And we will include non-U.S. players in the beta. Our servers will all be in English, as will our tech support. We will also work with our overseas licensees to provide localized servers for their territories. Bron |

Systeemeisen | |
De makers van Pirates of the Burning Sea houden ervan om de graphics zo hoog mogelijk te krijgen, daarom ook aardig hoge systeemeisen. We are optimizing the game for the latest DirectX 9.0-class cards, and are making use of both DX9 and PixelShader 2. We're also using very high-resolution textures, so if you have a card with as much as 256MB of RAM, we can put it to work. But at a minimum, you'll need a 1 gHz or better machine with at least an Nvidia GeForce 4 video card or comparable. You will also need a broadband internet connection such as DSL or cable modem. |
