Ok I've had to deal with this problem several times myself because I found the game to be extremely annoying with the box showing up during gameplay. Basically what I found was that Battlefield 1942 with patch 1.4x does not like it when you have certain unneccessary files or folders within the main install directory. There are some files that show up during a DC installation that can be cleaned up afterwards. The same goes for other mods. You need to go through all of your folders and do some major cleaning. (Please backup before doing this) I don't know if this pertains to specific video cards and their drivers but I do know I was able to fix the issue on a few occasions using these methods and NOT by altering my videocard, drivers, directx, display settings, etc. (for the record I'm running GF4 Ti4200 128mb with 44.03 drivers)
The people who re-install BF1942 and DC and still have this problem are missing an important step: they should have deleted the entire battlefield 1942 install directory (make sure you save your "settings" folder and other important folders and place them in another area of hard drive for backup purposes-- you can copy and paste them back over later)
Make sure in your root "Battlefield 1942" directory you do not have a folder called "bf1942". Look at the picture I have attached. The "bf1942" folder should be under "mods" and not at the root of your main install. Also delete any files from your "cache" folder (backthem up to be safe).
Take note : All it takes is one funky file in a mod directory under "mods" and you could get the black box. Cut and paste all of your mod folders out of the "mod" directory and try to get regular battlefield 1942 to play without the annoying box. Paste each mod back into the "mods" directory 1 by 1 to see if there's a specific mod that's causing the problem. Just so you know, if you have a duplicate .RFA in a certain folder or an .rfa that isn't supposed to be there you will get a CTD every time.
There have been lots of various methods posted on forums that deal with this issue but I figured I should share my crazy methods since some of you are still seeing this problem. Good luck and I hope you can get rid of the evil box.
Mogelijke oplossing 2:
