A Windows 98 NL system has the following (virus?) symptoms:
1 - after starting op the compu a program is active with a name like "pr85", "trfd3455" or "jk798".
2 - not possible to start or (un)install McAfee of Norton Virusscanner. Setup screen is suddenly closed and sometimes even the setup-executable is deleted. Also on-line virusscanner can't be executed since after the necessary program is downloaded, every IE screen is closed. So it is not possible to scan the compu for virusses.
3 - sometimes the .exe you just started is also deleted. This never happens btw with outlook express.
The system was "protected" with McAfee virusscanner, however the virusdatabase was 3 months old. Also, the virus shutdown McAfee.
Killing the program mentioned at (1) does not change the strange behaviour of the compu.
Cleaning the temp internet files with the compu in save mode also did not help.
Any suggestions are welcome.
