Taking the RADEON™ 9500 PRO to the next level 9700 pro
Before we get down to the modification of taking this RADEON™ 9500 PRO to the performance level of a RADEON™ 9700 PRO it is necessary to have a basic knowledge of a few DOS keystrokes and creating a start up disk as we do not want to access the Windows environment for flashing the video card bios.
To create a start up disk with in an XP operating system is straight forward. Place a blank 1.44MB floppy in drive 'A' for example. Click on my computer and you should see a similar screen to as shown below. Then right click the floppy drive icon and select format and the screenshot shown on the right should appear. Select to create a MS-DOS start up disk and that will produce a MS-DOS system start up disk enabling you to boot from a floppy drive. You may wish to produce a formatted disk without producing a start up disk for storing the Bios flashing utility and Rom image file.

One of the great things about the internet is it does not take long for information to surface and in the last few months various methods for increasing the performance of the ATI 9xxx family cards has arisen. We got this card the Hercules RADEON™ 9500 PRO for one purpose only and that was too see if we could modify it and push the performance up to the class of RADEON™ 9700 PRO. What will also favor many is there is absolutely no soldering to be done at all and the only risk we can see is perhaps a power failure during the bios flashing procedure .
How to do it in 10 Minutes! ...
To take the Hercules RADEON™ 9500 PRO to the performance of the RADEON™ 9700 PRO there are four pieces of software required of which three are essential and the fourth is to test the overclocking prior to modifying the bios rom file.
1.First file you need to download is the Radeon 9500 128Mb Pro Rom from *Warp11.Remember that rom file (95pro128.bin) is for the Radeon 9500 128Mb Pro video cards only! Do not attempt to use that file on any other model like a ATI 9000/9700 etc you will probably kill the card and guaranteed you will have no warranty.
2.Second file is ATIFLASH this is used to flash the bios with the rom file from a floppy drive in a DOS environment hence above shows you how to make a DOS start up disk. You can obtain ATIFLASH from *Warp11. This can be used on most makes of ATI cards.
3.Third file to download is RADEDIT from *Warp11.This program allows you to modify or set the clock frequencies of the bios and writes a string permanently into the bios rom file (95pro128.bin) which enables the RADEON™ 9500 PRO to run at whichever speed you set it to without the need of an overclocking utility. This becomes the fixed clock frequency of the memory and GPU core as shown below in the screenshot, you simply adjust the slider controls of the memory and gpu. The clock settings to set to equal a RADEON™ 9700 PRO are shown.
4.Download or use an overclocking utility to test the overclocking capability or optimum setting prior to using the RADEDIT software to create a new bios Rom file. Note there is no need to run a overclocking utility once the new bios Rom file is flashed, however it can allow you tweak it further but it may cause instability.
Once you have downloaded ATIFLASH and the 95pro128.bin file you need to uncompress those onto a blank formatted floppy disk. Do not create directories on floppy disks as you will be in DOS mode when these need to be opened. Just put ATIFLASH and the 95pro128.bin files in A:/.
Once that is done and you have the files in place on the floppy drive you need to uncompress the RADEDIT zip folder .This is a Windows based program and requires no keystrokes just click on the mouse and open the RADEDIT.exe. Then load the 95pro128.bin file from the floppy drive you should now have a screen like this shown below and adjust the clock frequencies to 310MHz(620MHz DDR)memory and 325MHz for the GPU and then save the file as 9700.bin or 9700.rom onto the floppy drive in drive A:/.
Time to flash the bios. ...
Has we said earlier you will need to boot up the system from the Windows Start up disk ,this will take you into the basic DOS environment and you do not need to worry about the CD drive and Hard disk access as all you need is the DOS environment. Once the system is booted all you should have is black screen with a A:/ displayed. Remove the boot up disk and insert the floppy disk with the ATIFLASH and the 9700.bin on it. You can check the files are there by using the command: DIR/W.
Now you are ready to flash the bios which will take about 10 seconds!. Type the following command :
atiflash -f -p 0 9700.bin or atiflash -f -p 0 9700.rom depending on which one you saved it has.
Now you have a RADEON™ 9700 PRO!almost without the 256BIT memory performance.Now you need to boot up into your Windows environment and re-install the Catalyst Drivers and note you will now see your card as a ATI RADEON™ 9700 PRO and you can verify the clock frequencies are set by using a overclocking utility like Radeonator 2.0 shown below.

The response to this article has been very overwhelming and many of you have quoted"why bother with the bios flash as you could just use a windows overclocking to utility to do the same?".The answer to that is the purpose of the bios flash to unlock the clock frequencies as many versions of the RADEON™ 9500 PRO are locked by default which prevents you increasing the frequency to these levels. If it was a case of just overclocking via a windows utility then we would have not bothered to produce this article.Many of you also quoted about what cooling we have used,the answer to that one is we used the default cooling design that the card is supplied with ,no other modification was done to the card apart from the bios flash.
