Een van de zaken die die Duitser daar vertelt tegen die verkeerdelijk gearresteerde man, Jakob Ungerleider:
"What you are giving me are words. (...) That is called "a story". And were are not here to tell stories. We are here to tel the truth."
(< fade to title sequence >
"THIS IS A TRUE STORY"

)
Mooi gelinkt.
Wat is waarheid? Wie vertelt de waarheid? Zijn er 2 waarheden? Het komt geregeld terug doorheen de reeks.
"A lie is not a lie if you believe it's true." --Emmitt
"You don't have to like the truth for it to be true." -- Gloria
"Perception of reality becomes reality" --VM Varga
"If evidence is collected, if confessions are made, if a verdict of guilty is entered in a court of law, then its happening becomes as the rocks and rivers, and to argue that it didn't happen, is to argue with reality itself". --VM Varga (slotscene)
"One's eyes can be deceived. We see what we believe, not the other way around." --VM Varga (slotscene opnieuw)
Zie o.a. deze reddit quote:
There is a lot going on with the concept of Truth in this season. How one person's 'truth' can conflict with another person's 'truth' without either party really being correct.
It sort of reminded me of the Rashomon Plot device/effect used by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. In that movie by the same name, four travelers are describing the murder of a Samurai that recently occurred and in which they are all suspects. The four participants in the proceedings describe their 'truth,' but through their own perspective and with their own agenda in mind. In the end, the priest hearing their tales concludes that they are all full of beans, and that the actual truth may never be known due to the way these four 'dueling truths' have twisted and distorted the narrative.
The interrogator in East Germany mentions that for the prisoner 'Yuri Gurka's' truth to be correct, the states version of the truth must be incorrect. Basically, "Are you calling the state a liar?"
The henchman Yuri Gurka monologues about the nature of pravda, nepravda and istina. Truth, Untruth and God's Truth. Sort of like he is saying what is true is relative and based upon your perspective, interests and knowledge. One thing may be true to a commoner, but not to a leader, and from a diety's point of view, neither the leader nor the commoner is capable seeing the full truth. They can only understand and frame the information available to them, and arrive at an imperfect, biased, typically self-serving conclusion.
Nikki mentions truth on the phone with Sy. She offers to tell Stella the truth about the tape she and Ray made to blackmail Emmit. She refers to Stella's reaction to the tape as her truth and offers to share a whole new truth about the tapes origins, for a fee of course. Which truth does Stella get? The version most convenient to Nikki.
Meanwhile, Gloria (with Winnie's help) has arrived at her own truth regarding the events that happened on the night of Ennis's murder. But it's a truth that is difficult to prove, so her new boss (Eli Thompson from Boardwalk Empire) does not accept her version. He has another truth ready to go, one that is more convenient to him, and means the case is closed.
I think the last example sort of dovetails nicely with the Stassi interrogation. The Stassi man may know a different truth, and being unable to prove it, has decided to pin the tail on some unlucky schnook which better serves his interests.
Just my best guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hard to say really, but I think the gist is truth is relative and difficult to come by. There are typically several different versions of it tied to any particular event. So in the end, truth is just a belief, as unknowable as God itself.
Het 2e seizoen had ook zo'n vage opener (die filmscene met indianen in het zwart wit).
