Q&A about the ATA shutdown
The news that the Allen Telescope Array has gone into "hibernation" due to lack of funds was broken by Scientific American. We've known that this was a possibility for quite a while, but are sorry to see it happen. Since there's an implied relationship between the SETI@home and the SETI Institute, I thought I would open a Q&A thread about this closure.

Q. How does this closure affect SETI@home?
A. It really doesn't. While some of our projects (Fly's Eye experiment) have used the ATA, SETI@home doesn't use any data from ATA. We also don't currently receive any funding from the SETI Institute, and are not affected by their budget.

Q. Why has the ATA closed?
A. The ATA has gone into hibernation due to lack of funding. ATA requires about $1.5M/yr for operations and an additional $1M/yr to support the SETI Institute's science programs. $2.5M/yr sounds like a lot, but the cost of one F/A-18 jet could fully fund that for 23.5 years.

Wat is SETI@home?
SETI@home is de naam van een wetenschappelijk experiment dat computers die via het internet met elkaar verbonden zijn, inzet om buitenaardse intelligentie op te sporen. U kunt hieraan deelnemen middels een gratis computerprogramma dat radiotelescoop-data download en analyseert.

Yesterday evening, one of our storage servers lost contact with its expansion enclosure. Upon power cycle, the expansion reappeared but the raid that spanned both head and expansion looks to be gone. This server contained the raw data that the splitter uses to create workunits. No raw data was lost because it is all backed up.

The evening before last, our science database machine locked up. A power cycle "fixed" that problem. As of yet we find no clues as to the cause of the lock up.

Jullie zullen het vandaag met inhaalstats moeten doen. Aan de andere kant, nu zijn er dubbele verse stats. En dat is ook nooit vervelend. Toch?

In deze ingehaalde stats zien we dat 't inhalen in ieder geval lukt. Falcon10 schuift in één beweging twee plaatsen op, in de daily zien we DB een greep naar de macht doen, met bijna de dubbele output van de nr. 2.

Change of management at AreciboML1 pointed out an article about the change of management of the Arecibo Observatory. Cornell University, which has managed Arecibo since it opened, will no longer be managing the Observatory. A consortium of organizations will new be handling the management. We don't expect this to affect SETI@home much. It may mean changes to how observing is scheduled and how much observing time we receive per year.

Verder hebben we vandaag ook nog twee nieuwe leden!

Work generation temporarily halted
We are having difficulties with one of our storage servers. Until we fix this we are unable to generate new work.

Yesterday evening, one of our storage servers lost contact with its expansion enclosure. Upon power cycle, the expansion reappeared but the raid that spanned both head and expansion looks to be gone. This server contained the raw data that the splitter uses to create workunits. No raw data was lost because it is all backed up.

The evening before last, our science database machine locked up. A power cycle "fixed" that problem. As of yet we find no clues as to the cause of the lock up.

ER waren tijden dat we 's nachts om 5 minuten na twaalven ons verhaal al klaar hadden en de stats posten en dan was je soms nog net iets te traag.

The storage server has been repaired. It will take some hours to resync the RAID. We will let that process complete before restarting work generation.

De stats van vandaag zijn redelijk saai. DB is weer terug op 't oude output-niveau en ook bij de verhuis-dienst is 't rustig. Alleen in de mijlpalenhoek is wat beweging te zien. Vier mijlpalen worden daar uitgedeeld.

More problems with workunit storage server...
One of the RAID arrays failed to rebuild. Personnel from Overland Storage are working to solve the problems. Meanwhile we're creating temporary working storage on Thumper.

storage service is back up
We have migrated storage service to thumper. Now it's a matter of transferring raw data to thumper, preprocessing it, and splitting it. This will all take some time. The Overland server is up and its raid is operational (thanks Overland!). Diagnosis of this unit is proceeding.
