Wat is SETI@home?
SETI@home is de naam van een wetenschappelijk experiment dat computers die via het internet met elkaar verbonden zijn, inzet om buitenaardse intelligentie op te sporen. U kunt hieraan deelnemen middels een gratis computerprogramma dat radiotelescoop-data download en analyseert.

Short status update: I turned on both the result/task pages and the resend-lost-results - the latter of course clearing out the pipes (still clogged with various ghost workunits).

The science database is fully loaded on oscar now, and we're now rebuilding all the indexes, running "update stats" on all the tables. This is taking a bit longer than we thought, though we have some knobs to turn to speed things along after the current set of queries pushes through. We're still looking at maybe starting the assimilators on Monday, and then new work creation on Tuesday. While not far fetched, that's still being optimistic. The database on thumper is indeed turned off. I'll adjust the server status page once oscar is able to show a green "running" status.

Jeff and I did some more server closet cleanup, but nothing noticeable in a picture.

Gisteren een flinke verhogen van onze output want we stijgen 9 plaatsen daily. Met dat geweld zijn er ook twee mijlpalen vergeven en die gaan naar Networker en m0s.
Hopelijk gaat het van de week lekker voorspoedig in Berkely met de server en dat we snel weer vers gras voor de kiezen krijgen. Terwijl hier in nederland de kans om een slippertje met het uur groter wordt zal daar geen sprake van zijn.

Veel succes vanavond onderweg naar huis.

Ik vraag het me ook af, mijn computers draaien alweer een hele tijd nu enkel AQUA@Home als vervanging van SETI@Home. Ik hoop binnenkort toch weer WUtjes te mogen verwelkomen!

Ik ben zo vrij geweest om de inhoud van jouw linkje even hier neer te gooien.

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- NASA will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

The news conference will be held at the NASA Headquarters auditorium at 300 E St. SW, in Washington. It will be broadcast live on NASA Television and streamed on the agency's website at http://www.nasa.gov.

Reporters may view the televised press conference at NASA Ames Research Center in the main auditorium, Bldg. 201 or ask questions by phone. To obtain dial-in information, journalists must send their name, affiliation and telephone number to Steve Cole at [e-mail] or call 202-358-0918 by 9 a.m. PST Dec. 2, 2010.

For those who were celebrating, hope you had a lovely thanksgiving weekend. Things around here were fairly mellow, though progress continues.

The thumper-to-oscar conversion is still on schedule. In fact, just minutes ago we dropped the old spike table now that all those spikes were copied into the current spike table. It's amazing how fast you can drop a table containing 1.3 billion rows, though I did feel a disturbance in the force.

This morning we stopped the assimilators so the database is in a quiescent state. We're now backing it up one last time, and tomorrow morning we hope to "recover" oscar using this backup, which means it'll get populated with all current scientific data. This may take a day, and then we'll burn it in by starting up the assimilators again, maybe run some NTPCkrs. If all goes well we're still on for opening the floodgates again early next week.

In the meantime Jeff and I continue to rearrange the closet, cleaning it up, shuffling servers between racks and breakers to regain some organizational sanity. We also were tired of having the kvm monitor on top of the rack which was hard to read from down below. This picture shows the current status of things, including the monitor now nicely at eye level.

Volgens deze bron die het weer van een andere bron heeft gaat het om micro-organismen die zonder fosfor kunnen ont-/bestaan.

As planned, we are now recreating the master science database on oscar using the cleaned-up backup dump from thumper. This should take about a day. We were worried about the slow disk i/o when we started this process - isn't this new machine supposed to be faster? Well, I dug into the RAID config on oscar a bit and tweaked a few parameters which quickly sped up the disk i/o to roughly 900% better than this morning.

While this is going on Jeff and I tackled the closet some more - today's job was more power cable organization but mostly worked on rewiring all the ethernet cables so they were more orderly. Perhaps you noticed various servers going down at random as we unplugged/replugged systems one by one. Here's where we're at now:

Yay, ik heb op m'n PC en op m'n servertje eindelijk weer wat WU's ontvangen. Niet veel, maar toch. Zowel CPU- als GPU-WU'tjes.

Aan de stats is nog niet te zien dat het de goede kant op gaat, de scores zijn zelfs lager dan gisteren. Maar toch ben ik positief! Je kunt je tenslotte niet de hele dag groen en geel ergeren. Er moeten lichtpuntjes zijn.

En als ze er niet zijn, dan doe je maar net als of

Zo was ik vandaag erg blij dat 't minder koud aanvoelde dan gisteren. En zo'n sneeuwlandschap ziet er ook mooi uit. Dat 't niet handig is als je nog met de auto wegmoet, daar heb ik 't maar niet over

Short status update: I turned on both the result/task pages and the resend-lost-results - the latter of course clearing out the pipes (still clogged with various ghost workunits).

The science database is fully loaded on oscar now, and we're now rebuilding all the indexes, running "update stats" on all the tables. This is taking a bit longer than we thought, though we have some knobs to turn to speed things along after the current set of queries pushes through. We're still looking at maybe starting the assimilators on Monday, and then new work creation on Tuesday. While not far fetched, that's still being optimistic. The database on thumper is indeed turned off. I'll adjust the server status page once oscar is able to show a green "running" status.

Jeff and I did some more server closet cleanup, but nothing noticeable in a picture.

Wat een prut vannacht toen we naar huis reden zeg. Een cm of 5 sneeuw op de snelweg A73 en dan ingehaald worden door sneeuwschuivers is niet grappig. Naar de bios geweest waar we Harry Potter hebben gekeken. Damm kan niet wachten op part deux.


Ondanks de aanhoudende stroom van GEEN wu zijn er toch weer stats en mooie getallen.

Ehm, de laatste versie

Na het vorige sneeuwseizoen, heb ik de "slijtrand" aan de onderkant vervangen. Het was plastic, nu is dat een dikke plank (ca 2,5cm dik). Dat werkt op zich goed.

Enige probleem is de plaat die ik als "schuifbord" heb. Die is eigenlijk iets te breed, waardoor ik te weinig grip op de wielen krijg als er een grote bult sneeuw voor ligt. Bij een smaller bord, kan ik "eindeloos" door blijven gaan. Aan de andere kant, ik kan nu wel mooier een grote vlakte schuiven, omdat ik makkelijker banen kan overlappen.

En als laatste minpuntje: als ik het bord scheef zet ten opzichte van de rijrichting, komt bij het opheffen één hoek van het schuifbord niet ver genoeg omhoog. De constructie is niet stijf genoeg, waardoor de zaak wat gaat doorhangen.

Maar de winter is nog niet om, dus er is nog tijd genoeg voor optimalisatie
