Wat is SETI@home?
SETI@home is de naam van een wetenschappelijk experiment dat computers die via het internet met elkaar verbonden zijn, inzet om buitenaardse intelligentie op te sporen. U kunt hieraan deelnemen middels een gratis computerprogramma dat radiotelescoop-data download en analyseert.

BELANGRIJK: wekelijks driedaagse server outage

Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up
Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand.

I'm starting a thread to let people know what's going on with the mork (our boinc DB server) issue.

As most of you know, mork will sometimes hang, requiring a power cycle to boot. There are no footprints as to what causes this. So we strongly suspect hardware.

Mork has a sister machine (mindy, of course) that never really worked (both are donated, used, HW). So mindy is mork's parts machine. This is a little dicey because we don't know why mindy did not work.

The RAM in these machines are arranged on 4 daughter boards. Last week we swapped all four of mindy's identically populated memory boards into mork. But at least one of the "new" sticks was bad because mork then showed differing amounts of memory across subsequent boots.

So we returned mork's original memory and ran the first three memtest tests. They showed no error. The final several tests are very time consuming and we may or may not do them, as mork's OS is down for these tests.

Today, we swapped mindy's two power supplies into mork. This is not because we strongly suspect the power supplies but because this is an easy exercise.

If mork hangs again, we are likely to replace the entire machine. Further component testing is becoming too cumbersome and time consuming. And after all, we now have the funds to do this because your very generous donations (thank you!!!).

Helaas nog steeds geen stats, en dat terwijl de servers allemaal draaien worden er geen stats gegenereerd.
Gelukkig worden ze wel gewoon opgeteld en weten we persoonlijk wel wat er op ons conto staat.

Zoals sommigen al wel weten is er een tweede fund drive gestart door ene msattler op het seti forum.
En het goede nieuws is dat ern een tweede maal een 10.000 dollar is opgehaald en het einde nog niet in zicht is. Dan heb ik zoiets van dat dat weer goed hoop moet gaan geven voor betrouwbare servers.

Is er trouwens een rss-feed van SETI die werkt? De nieuwsfeeds van de homepage zijn bij mij leeg namelijk... Ik vind het wel mooi om ook berichten van SETI op die manier te ontvangen. Twitter zou ook goed zijn maar die kan ik ook niet vinden...

Ik heb geen idee, ik gebruik de Seti-rss-feed niet.

Onderaan het tech-news-forum ( http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_forum.php?id=21 ) staat wel een link, met daarin instelbaar van welke posters je de berichten in de feed wilt hebben.

Als je daar instelt dat je alleen de "moderators" wilt zien, heb je in principe alleen 't seti-nieuws en geen reacties van users.

Of bedoel je wat anders?

Ja Duurde even maar dan heb je ook wat

Zo en een tweede dag met na een lange periode van geen stats.
Ik moet wel erkennen dat BleuTooth76 als een speer gaat met gisteren bijna 2 ton op de teller laat ie iedereen voor zich.
Heeft ie ook nog een mijlpaal en stijgt hij ook weer een plaats overal.

Ook wat server nieuws betreft het schijnt zo te zijn dat er al een server is besteld en dat geeft wel hoop op veel minder problemen in de toekomst. De tweede fundraiser heeft ongeveer 13k opgeleverd, en is daarmee een mooi budget voor een tweede server.
