2 smp clients draaien op een Quad maakt toch qua uitput weinig uit heb ik gemerkt. Je doet zoveel langer om een project af te krijgen dat je net zo goed 1 x de smp kan draaien en dan in 14 a 15 uur klaar te zijn.

wat ik wel doe is als smp client 1 op 90% is smp client 2 aanzetten zodat die al een paar procent heeft gedaan als smp client 1 gereed is. Op de duur heb je dan zoveel tijd winst geboekt dat je binnen 24 uur
2 x flushed.

SPM is juist ontwikkeld om van multicore processors gebruik te maken, dus of je nu 2 of meer cores hebt, hij benut ze allemaal wanneer het programma één keer runt. (hoe dat bij meer dan 4 cores is weet ik niet, dus dan zou dit neit hoeven gelden).
Feit bij een quadcore is iig dat je idd geen winst behaalt wanneer je meerdere keren de SMP-client opstart.

Sterker nog, de SMP client is hardcoded gemaakt om van 4 threads gebruik te maken. Ergo: gemaakt voor 4 cores. Als je meer cores hebt, zal je meerdere clients moeten gebruiken.

Dat is overigens niet meer het geval met 1 van de nieuwe SMP clients, al weet ik even zo gauw niet meer of dat de Linux of Windows versie was. Daarbij kon je namelijk instellen van hoeveel cores er gebruik mocht worden gemaakt. Handig voor de mensen met een quadcore en een Ati kaart. 3 cores laten werken voor de SMP client, en 1 core vrij houden voor communicatie met de videokaart om daar de GPU client op te laten draaien.

Smoking2000 kan vast wel vertellen over welke client dat precies gaat. Meen te herinneren dat dat ook in 1 van zijn posts voorbij is gekomen over updates van de SMP clients.

Geen idee ik heb tot de stampede prima gedraaid met de 5.91beta6 versie op een X2 4200+, maar ik las al dat er mensen waren met problemen met de nieuwste versie.

Ik heb ook nog een vraag, zijn er hier mensen met ervaring met Mac OSX OctoCores? En dan bij voorkeur zonder console. (Mac OS X (Intel) SMP OS X 10.4+ 6.10 beta2) Een van onze teammembers is aan het testen met zo'n 8-kern-apple maar heeft er de grootste problemen mee. Ik heb 'm een keer getest met een kennis op z'n MacBook Pro dual, maar die sloeg compleet vast na het opstarten tot 3 keer toe. Daarna de console geprobeerd en dat liep prima.
Als het goed is gaat het over meerdere machines, dus dat zou zonde zijn om die niet in te kunnen zetten. Maar dan moet ie wel werken en niet het hele station vast laten slaan, het liefst dus met een grafische client. Any experience ?

Ik hoor zojuist dat de consoleclient op 1% is blijven steken en na een restart helemaal niet meer wou draaien, hetzelfde na een herinstall. Blijkbaar loopt het nog voor geen meter, iemand suggesties?

We are happy to release new versions of the OSX/Intel console and linux clients to beta. Version 6.02 contains one major improvement:
In addition to running with the -smp flag, you can now request a number of cores to use by using -smp <n>.

Several important notes:
Only projects using the A2 core support variable number of processes. The majority of our projects currently use the A1 core and are locked to 4 processes. So if you run with -smp 6 and get an A1 WU, the client will step down to using 4 processes for that WU. If your next WU is A2, the client will step back up to 6. We will be releasing more A2 projects as time goes on.

We currently support 4 <= n <= # of physical cores. (On a dual-core machine, n goes to 4). Using more processes than the # of physical cores in a machine degrades performance substantially.

***Do not change your value of n in the middle of a WU. This will likely cause loss of the WU.***

New Windows SMP client release

We are excited to release a new Windows SMP client to beta. This is an *early* beta release--please expect some rough edges.
Read below for details:

*how to get it*
go to the download page: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download (substitute your language as appropriate) and look for the 5.92 client

***how to install it***
The installation process is a little complicated. PLEASE READ BELOW.
1. The initial release is a *replacement* for your current 5.91 SMP client. We will have a fresh install version soon.
2. Make a backup of a working FAH Windows/SMP installation. Install into your current SMP working directory
3. Unzip the 5.92 file in your test directory
4. Open a command prompt window (run as administrator if Vista)
5. run install.bat. This will do several things
.. a) install DeinoMPI. You don't need to do anything special here
.. b) create a "credential store" that DeinoMPI will use to authenticate the mpi processes. Important: do not use a passphrase here (just hit return for no passphrase and say yes, you're sure). I recommend encrypting the data and using the registry for storage.
.. c) add your user information to the encrypted credential store. This will prompt you for your username and password.
.. d) run the standard mpiexec -np 2 foo test application to make sure things work. On some WinXP systems, you may see a defective Windows Firewall dialogue box come up. The firewall may also ask you to unblock applications (this is a good idea).
Notes from the forum mods on the above process:
5.d) The Windows Firewall dialog box will pop up twice. The first time, you will be able to see and click Unblock for DeinoMPI. The second time, the pop up window is hosed. However, since the unblock button has a hot key, you can press alt+u to unblock the next item and make it go away. I checked my firewall exceptions list after unblocking both. The second pop up is for fahcore1.exe.
5.d.2) I found a different bypass. After having gotten the hosed windows many times in WinXP I went to Start + ControlPanel + SecurityCenter + WindowsFirewall. On the Exceptions tab I scrolled through the list of names, adding a checkmark to the appropriate boxes.
6. Start fah.exe as normal.
7. Please report problems to this forum.

*what's different in 5.92*
With version 5.92, we have switched to a different MPI implementation (DeinoMPI instead of MPICH). In our testing thus far, this new implementation is *much* more stable for FAH. Performance is roughly comparable, with perhaps a slight speed increase. But stability and reliability is what we're going for here.
DeinoMPI is backwards-compatible with MPICH, so your old core binaries will work. However, most of the benefits come with a new core binary. One is included in the install package; the client should also auto-download Deino-specific core binaries. Similarly, the mpiexec binary for DeinoMPI differs from MPICH.
Look for new Deino-specific features coming in the future.

*other notes*
5.92 does not currently support 64-bit Windows. This is something we will work on in the future.
As with 5.91, we do not yet officially support running 5.92 as a service. It is possible to do this, but it requires setting several dependencies, etc. Other FAH donors may have helpful hints here.
