Post subject: Windows SMP open beta test

We are pleased to announce the release of our Folding@Home Windows SMP client to open beta!

Please keep in mind that this is beta software. There will be bugs. You may lose work. If you are looking for a "safe" way to complete work (and earn points), we do not recommend using a beta client. For those who are willing to risk a little more debugging and the potential of some lost work (and points), this is a wonderful way to contribute to the science and see the latest technology coming out of the Folding@Home project.

For installation instructions, please see the SMP FAQ or the readme file included with the client.

The client can be downloaded at:

Please note that the client requires version 2.0 of the Microsoft .NET framework.

We will have a forum available shortly for discussion of the Windows SMP beta client.

If a server with SMP WU's is not available or is overloaded, the client will be assigned to 0.0.0.0, which tells the client to wait and try again. As more SMP servers come on line, this won't be an issue, but during the beta test, we want to keep the SMP clients crunching SMP WU's.

Ja, de Windows SMP moet beter draaien dan de Linux SMP simpelweg omdat de VMWare Virualisatie laag ertussen uit is, en de resource usage van een 2e OS.

Post subject: The SMP Client and preferred deadlines.

The SMP client is a high performance client, and as such, is meant to be run 24/7, and on 4-core hardware. This "strong recommendation" is reflected in the very short deadlines, and also in the bonus applied to these WUs. Ideally the preferred deadline should be the one people are trying to beat, since after this the WU gets reassigned to someone else and the work is duplicated. This is a waste of CPU cycles and slows down the progression of WU generations if a large number of WUs are run twice (as you can imagine).

Below is a table showing roughly the minimum speed required by dual core clients to meet the preferred deadline when running 24/7.

(VMware speeds are based on a 20% overhead which leads to slightly conservative values):

Following some research done by susato, it appears that a 1.66 Mac Mini (i.e. a Core Duo), is borderline on the preferred deadlines. A dedicated machine folding 24/7 will manage to just beat the preferred deadline around 90% of the time, and just miss it the rest of the time.

Ok, bedankt voor je reactie, dan switch ik maar naar de windows client als de huidige test onder vmware klaar is.

Ik draai de windows smp client al een tijdje en hij ziet er leuk uit. Over het algemeen ook redelijk stabiele client. Er waren wat issues met het correct afsluiten maar die zijn hoogst waarschijnlijk met deze nieuwe versie opgelost.

Client draait hier op een pc sinds mijn ontwaken vanmorgen Nog geen problemen tegengekomen, installatie en WU ophalen was binnen 2 minuten geregeld. Alleen jammer dat het nog geen service kent, zit je met zo'n schermpje

Nu zijn er natuurlijk andere WU's voor de linux en windows SMP bedacht, maar als de puntenwaardering ongeveer hetzelfde moet zijn, lijkt mij de Win-variant wel trager dan de linux. Op dezelfde hardware (heb twee dezelfde systemen, eentje met linux en eentje met windows) doet linux zo'n 1600 PPD, en windows 1100 PPD. Nog altijd meer dan vier afzondelijke clients/WU's, maar het verschil is wel een stuk minder groot. Naja, maar eens kijken hoe het gaat allemaal

Sinds een korte tijd is de OpenGL toolkit beschikbaar waarmee de viewer applicatie van de Intel Mac SMP client is geschreven.

Er is een speciaal subforum onder het Third Party Contributions forum hiervoor aangemaakt, de Graphics playground.

Over de OpenGL toolkit zei Adam Beberg, de Cosm developer, het volgende:

De GPU client vind games niet bepaald leuk, daarom is het advies om je GPU client uit te zetten als je gaat gamen.

Kijk, hiernaar was ik dus benieuwd, de puntenwaardering is dus of wel lager of de client is gewoon langzamer. Zolang ik er niemand mee benadeel blijf ik dan toch nog maar de linux versie draaien.

Wat performance betreft? Ik denk het niet, het grootste voordeel van 64 bit is het gebruik van meer dan 4gb geheugen. Zoveel gebruikt F@H niet dus het lijkt me niet dat de puntwaardering daarvoor hoger ligt. Daarnaast draai ik de vmware image onder een 32 bit windows xp.

Voordeel vind ik wel dat je één client hebt die netjes van 4 cores gebruik maakt.

Toch even een vraagje over de windows SMP client.
Bij installatie vraagt ie om een windows login name en paswoord.

Nu gebruik ik voor mijn windows login geen paswoord. Dit pikt de install echter niet. Iemand hier een omweg voor (behalve een paswoord aanmaken voor windows login)?

Ben nu druk aan het proberen met de Windows SMP client (toch maar ff windows paswoord ingesteld), maar krijg tot nu toe alleen nog errors (3x op rij) zodra ie begint te rekenen: Client Core communication error: Error 0x7b

Ahhhh tijdens het typen van dit bericht gaat ie aan de slag.... Op Folding forum was er 1 persoon die hetzelfde had, oplossingen waren er nog niet gegeven.
