Drive Type: DVD-ROM
Drive Interface: IDE
Drive Brand: LG
Drive Model Number: GDR-8163B
Driver Used: Apple Hacked
Mac Model: Apple Beige G3
Mac OS Version: OS X
Reader Comments: My particular Beige G3 is an All-In-One A/V running 180MB RAM, 266Mhz G3, 40GB HD, and dual boot into OSX 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. An ATI Radeon 7000 32MB VGA PCI card was installed, along with ATI drivers and DVD patches.
The drive plugged right in with no problems. It is recognized in both OSX and 9.2.2. DVD playback is good in both X and 9.2.2, and is bootable via C for the 9.x install disc. Unfortunately, I was unable to boot the OSX install CD though it is readable once you boot into OSX or 9.2.2. Overall a good, cheap, DVD-ROM drive.
FYI, you don't need an upgraded CPU or UltraATA card to play DVDs--only the upgraded video card, DVD drive and software patches.
There does seem to be a problem with a PCI USB card (Belkin Components Busport for Macintosh F5U005-Mac) and the Radeon that will cause the system to freeze on startup into OSX and won't accept USB devices in OS 9.2.2. However, using a generic PCI USB2.0/Firewire combo card that wasn't the case.
Please note that I didn't change the jumper settings on the drive, I just installed it.
Mike Comments: Any idea what the drive speed rating is? i.e. 16x/48x (DVD/CD max rating)
Normally the drive should be set to master (if it's replacing the original drive).

Reader Comments: Hi there, LG has gone a bit wild on releasing new DVD-ROM drives recently and thought I should tell you that I have managed to get their new GDR-8163B drive to boot from 2 different System discs in an old Beige G3.
No problems with Data DVDs, haven't tried DVD Movies but obviously you would want to use OS X for that (no need for hardware DVD Decoder). (OS X's dvd player requires a rage128 or later grapics card - the Beige G3 onboard RageII/RagePro chip is not supported. OS 9.x's 2.x DVD player also works with the Rage128 and later cards - use the patched version mentioned for several years in the FAQ's DVD section.-Mike)
Also the drive is hilariously cheap at about GBP 15.
The only change I made to the drive was flashing it to the latest firmware, 0L23 from 0L14. The only issue with the drive is that there is no region free firmware for the latest firmware version but there is a beta available here:
http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GDR8163B
and no doubt the final version will be released soon.
Mike
Mike Comments: I'm guessing you used a PC to flash the drive? (never saw a Mac OS compatible flasher for teac drives - can't check that link you have right now.)

Reader Comments: What a wonderful resource this website is. I wanted to be able to watch DVD's on my Beige G3 and it couldn't have been easier. I installed the Radeon 7000 Mac Edition drivers before I installed the video card. I downloaded TomeViewer and extracted the Apple DVD Player 2.7. Then I applied the patch from the FAQ's. (patched player for PCI macs and os 9 - see FAQ's DVD section)
Everything worked exactly as expected without a hitch. The LG DVD/CD-ROM replaced the original Sony CD-ROM in less than ten minutes as per the website instructions.
The new drive is not as quiet as the original drive and the fan runs more since the Radeon card produces more heat than the one it replaced, but this is nothing compared to being able to watch movies on the ol' G3.
And the drive is bootable (from CD) in OS 9.2.2. I would not have been able to do all the above without this site. Thanks, Mike!
Mike Comments: thanks., glad the info helped.

OS X 10.2 en OS 9.2.2 moeten gewoon te installeren zijn van CD, anders moet je eens kijken of je de installatie wel helemaal goed gedaan door deze instructies te volgen:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3-ZONE/hival52x/install.html
Iets anders wat je kan proberen is nieuwe firmware (soort BIOS) te installeren:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macos/331
Wellicht is de volgende opmerking van de installation guide ook van belang:
Power up your system and verify that the drive functions correctly. If the drive doesn't work at first boot - check the cables again to make sure you did not pull one side of the connector up during reassembly. To verify the system will boot from the CDROM drive, either select the drive as the startup disk or hold down the 'C' key at powerup with a System CD in the drive. (Use an OS 8.5 CD or another CD that contains the Apple CD/DVD v1.2.2 extension that is needed to support booting with the drive in my tests - OS 8.1 CDs would not boot.)
