Section 1: Remove Norton AntiVirus from the registry
Follow the steps below to automatically remove Norton AntiVirus registry entries using a reg file.

WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.

To remove Norton AntiVirus from the registry
Click nav2005xp_reg_removal.reg to start the download.
Click Save.
Change the location in the "Save in" field to Desktop.
Click Save.
If prompted, click Close when the download completes.
On the Windows desktop, double-click nav2005xp_reg_removal.reg to import the changes into your registry.
At the next prompt, click OK. The Norton AntiVirus registry keys are removed.
Go on to the next section.

Follow these steps to reinstall Windows Script 5.6:
To reinstall Windows Script 5.6
Go to the Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 Web site.
Click the Download button under the section headed "Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP."
Click Open or Run this program from its current location.
Click Yes at the next prompt.
Click Yes at the license agreement.
When the installation is finished, at the "Windows Script 5.6 is now installed!" dialog box, click OK.
Close all running programs, and restart the computer.
What you do next depends on your situation.
If Norton AntiVirus 2005 was upgraded from a previous version of Norton AntiVirus before Norton AntiVirus 2004 (for example, you originally installed Norton AntiVirus 2003 and then upgraded to 2004 and then to Norton AntiVirus 2005): Go on to the next section and continue following the instructions in all of the remaining sections.
If Norton AntiVirus 2005 was upgraded from Norton AntiVirus 2004 and no other previous version was installed before: Skip to the section "Remove the Norton AntiVirus folders" and continue following the instructions in all of the remaining sections.
If there was no previous version of the program installed: Skip to the section "Remove the Norton AntiVirus folders" and continue following the instructions in all of the remaining sections.

WARNING: Follow these steps only if you have upgraded from Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier. The Rnav2003.exe utility will not remove Norton AntiVirus 2004 or 2005.

Decide which method to use
If you are running Windows XP:
And you upgraded from Windows 98/Me without first uninstalling Norton AntiVirus: Go to "Method 1: To run the Rnav2003 removal utility to remove Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier."
And Norton AntiVirus was installed after upgrading the operating system: Go to "Method 2: To run the Rnav2003 removal utility to remove Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier."
If you are running Windows 2000: Go to Method 2.
Method 1: To run the Rnav2003 removal utility to remove Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier
Follow the instructions in the document How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to download the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to your desktop.
Right-click the Rnav2003.exe removal utility, and then click Properties.
On the Compatibility tab, select Run this program in compatibility mode for:
From the drop-down menu, choose the operating system that you had before you upgraded to Windows XP.
Click Apply > OK.
Double-click the Rnav2003.exe icon.
When you are asked, choose the version of Norton AntiVirus that was originally installed. (For example, say that you originally installed Norton AntiVirus 2001 and then upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2002 and then upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2003. You would run the RNAV2003.exe removal tool for Norton AntiVirus 2001 first, restart the computer, run the utility again for Norton AntiVirus 2002, restart the computer again, run the utility one more time for Norton AntiVirus 2003, and restart the computer one last time.)
Continue on to the section "Remove the Norton AntiVirus folders."
Method 2: To run the Rnav2003 removal utility to remove Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier
Follow the instructions in the document How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to download the Rnav2003.exe removal utility to your desktop.
Double-click the Rnav2003.exe icon.
When you are asked, choose the version of Norton AntiVirus that was originally installed. (For example, say that you originally installed Norton AntiVirus 2001 and then upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2002 and then upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2003. You would run the Rnav2003.exe removal tool for Norton AntiVirus 2001 first, restart the computer, run the utility again for Norton AntiVirus 2002, restart the computer again, run the utility one more time for Norton AntiVirus 2003, and restart the computer one last time.)
Continue on to the section "Remove the Norton AntiVirus folders."

In the following steps, if Windows does not permit you to delete a folder, delete the files that are in the folder and then continue with the next item. Windows might not permit you to delete all the files in the folder. If so, delete the files that you can, and then continue with the next item.
To remove Norton AntiVirus folders
On the Windows desktop, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.
Delete the Norton AntiVirus installation folder:
C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus
If you installed Norton AntiVirus to a location other than the default location, then delete the Norton AntiVirus folder in that location.
Do one of the following:
If you have no other Symantec products on the computer, delete the following three folders:
C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
If you have other Symantec products on the computer, delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus|
Close Windows Explorer.
What you do next depends on your situation.

To do this after a failed uninstall requires that you follow the steps in this document first to remove most of the program, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus and finally uninstall again using Add/Remove Programs.
