Step 1
===========
1. Click Start>Run.
2. Type "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
3. In the left window of the Registry Editor, browse to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
4. Left-click to select the Explorer folder.
5. In the right window, look for the EnableAutoTray value.
6. Double-click EnableAutoTray and set 0 in the "Value data" box.
Step 2
==========
1. Right click Start, select Properties.
2. Click the Taskbar tab, clear the Lock the taskbar option and then check the Hide
inactive icons option.
3. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.
4. In the Current Items section, select each of the items as "Always hide".
5. Click OK, and then click OK again.
6. Reopen the Properties dialog, and select each of the items as "Hide when
inactive" in the Current Items section.
7. Click OK, and then click OK again.
8. Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values from the following registry
key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
9. Close Registry Editor.
10. Close all the programs that you are running. (Note: do not restart the computer
at this time.)
11. Click Start, click Run, type “taskmgr” (without quotation marks) in the Open
box, and click OK to open the Windows Task Manager.
12. In the Windows Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click the Explorer.exe in
the Image Name column, and click the End Process button. You will receive the
warning to confirm it, click Yes. (The Explorer.exe is the system shell.)
13. After that, the Desktop and all the programs will be closed except the Windows
Task Manager. In Windows Task Manager, click File, click New Task, in the Create
New Task box, type “explorer”(without quotation marks) in the Open box, and click
OK.
14. Check to see if “Hide Inactive Icons” works.
