[ghost] ghost of een soort ghost voor 2003 server?

in de readme van ghost 2003 (edition 2, die bij systemworks 2004 pro zit) las ik het volgende:

Norton Ghost 2003 is not designed for or supported for use with
Microsoft Windows server-class operating systems.

ik heb onlangs een 2003 server geinstalleerd, die we op internet gaan hangen.
ik wil natuurlijk een ghost oid maken, voor alsie in de soep loopt, dat ik 'm binnen 15 min weer op de rit heb

de nieuwste ghost support het niet (oid)
ik heb 'm geinstalleerd, en ook een ghost gemaakt, een image file
ging allemaal prima

ik wil eigenlijk testen of het werkt, en die image geheel terug zetten (including windows) maar durf het niet

is er niet iets wat wel 100% support geeft ? of werkt dit gewoon ?

Denk dat hij wel gewoon support voor heeft, want ghost zet alles bit voor bit terug, dus maakt niet uit wat erop staat of wat voor bestandsysteem. Ik ga er dus van uit dat het gewoon gaat werken.

Heb je niet iets van een testsysteem waarop je het zou kunnen testen.

ik ga morgen misschien proberen die image op een andere harddisk te zetten en dan van die andere disk te booten, maar da's ammel weer zo veel werk

ik was er vroeger ook van overtuigd dat hij bit voor bit opslaat, maar dat is bullshit
waarom zouden er anders nieuwere versies uitkomen ?

Vanwege bugfixes en nieuwe features en mischien nieuwe compressietechnieken erin.

toch kan ik het bijna niet geloven

dan zou ik met de eerste ghost "theoretisch" een 2003 server moeten kunnen backuppen

I've been down this road months ago. below you will find the support e-mail from them stating why your "ghosting" of svr 2k3 doesn't work.

further investigation leads to the reason it fails as Windows Server 2003's NTFS version is newer than Windows XP & (obviously) Win2k.

Wesley, Ghost 2003 has not been tested with Windows 2003 Server, so
attempting to clone this type of machine is not supported.

In general, Ghost is not designed as a server cloning tool and does
not support cloning Windows 2000/Windows NT Server. Using Ghost to
clone servers is going well beyond its intended capabilities. Ghost is
designed as a workstation cloning utility.

Mike, Ghost 7.5 and Ghost 8.0 are certified by Microsoft to run on
Windows 2003 Server, so I don't see this as a potential issue.

We have also imaged machines that held images without any problems.

Depending on how you are moving the images, I would suspect that you
are dropping packets during the transfer of these files and
consequently corrupting the images.

Have you tried running an Integrity Check on the images after they
have been moved?

Please follow the steps outlined in the document linked below to check
the integrity of the image file:

Backup
When cloning a server for backup purposes, the SID does not need to be changed and Ghost should be successful, provided the system's hardware is not changed after the backup has been made. If hardware was changed, the computer might not be able to boot up after restoring the backup. For a description of hardware considerations,

Ghost gebruikt zover ik weet file-level copying. Daarom kun je er geen Solaris mee imagen, bijvoorbeeld. Hij snapt 't filesystem niet.

Overigens werkt 't prima voor win2k server, maar goed. Als 't de NTFS van win2k3 (die idd wijzingen heeft) niet snapt zul je moeten wachten op een ghost die dat wel doet, of een block-level imaging programma gebruiken.
