Doom 3 overview
|
It has been over ten years since we first came across the phenomenon known as DOOM, and now the third installment in the classic game series is nearing completion. Not a sequel, but a retelling of the original story, the hero is again a marine on a Mars research facility funded by the Union Aerospace Corporation. UAC is researching experimental technology, such as transportation gates that allow fast passage through vast distances. Little is known about the story, but this time around id Software has hired professional writer from such games as the 7th Guest and the Eleventh Hour, Matt Castelo to pen it. No matter what's ahead, this is still DOOM, and the hero will be alone except for the seldom occasions he runs across helpful NPC's strewn throughout the base.
• DOOM 3 will feature cutting edge graphics that will not only make the world approach cinema quality visuals, but provide a new style of gameplay. Players will be be able to rely on shadows to help locate the enemies and use them to hide while figuring out the best way to terminate horrifying monsters and stay alive. With all the light sources being destructible, players will have to make sure to check their fire. If the lights go out, all they will have as backup is a dinky flashlight, and unlike humans, the hordes of hell don't need light to see.
• One of the new things DOOM 3 will allow is seamless integration between models and static world objects. Most importantly, monsters and characters will completely blend in with the environment, which in turn means that they will not stick out but rather blend into shadows and come out on the unsuspecting player. The system also will allow certain scripted destructible scenes in an engine with no destructible environments. Moreover, these inserts will in no way look detached from the game, so determining whether something is a scripted event or not will be quite a challenge.
• In addition to a superb graphics engine comes an incredible sound system that supports the latest surround technology. Effects will appear to be coming from the objects that made them, helping the player assess his or her surroundings more efficiently. This is a great help since the game will be very dark.
• There will be no use key in DOOM 3. Instead a rather intuitive and fluid system will be in place. When a player approaches a screen that can be interacted with, his or her gun will lower and the crosshair will turn into a cursor to manipulate said screen. When the player steps back, the gun is returned to its position.
• The player will be receiving missions and various updates through a PDA that will be given to him or her in the beginning of the game. Through this PDA, a "Sarge" character will issue the players orders, mission objectives, etc. This PDA will also be able to download info from various computer terminals and other PDA's from other characters in the game.
• Many of the classic DOOM monsters will be making a return. The zombies will be back, but they come in many shapes and sizes. From the thin, to the fat, zombies with chain guns, zombies with tentacles, and even zombies with chainsaws. They are not the brightest of enemies, but be careful, they may look like they're dead and still get up and creep up behind you.
• The imps will be back as well, this time with a firmer grip on reality, or the walls rather. The new imps jump, climb walls and ceilings and still retain the ability to throw fireballs. Don't let them get too close, since they use those sharp claws to scratch as well.
• The Revenant will be back and he hasn't been changed too much. Still ugly and bony, he punches and kicks, and still has 2 guided rocket launchers on his shoulders.
• Hellknights won't have horns or hooves anymore, nor does he shoot green balls of plasma. But he is big, he is hard to kill, and he can throw you across the room without batting an eye.
• The Demons will still be there, seems to be the pet of choice in hell. This time the beast is a hybrid of mechanical and organic construction, so when you hear that "clank clank" of his cybernetic legs, get yourself onto a higher surface, because the beast has trouble biting up.
• Lost souls also seem to get a mechanical touch up in this remake, but they still fly in packs and bite. You can also expect Cacodemons, and Cyberdemons to be included in game as well
• One of the new monsters include the Trites. These look like spiders, with human heads for a body, and fingers for legs. Like the lost souls they also travel in packs and use webs to drop down on an unsuspecting player.
• Weaponry will be close to that of the original DOOM. Your pistol will be there as the basic weapon, good enough for zombies, but nearly useless against stronger enemies. The shotgun seems to be the weapon of choice: It packs quite a punch, but reloading it takes time, and that time can be enough to get killed. The chain gun will be back with a generous clip, but less power than the shotgun. Also back is the rocket launcher, and it seems to have the powerful feel of the old DOOM version. The BFG is also returning, but nothing is known about it although it should be known as the BFG 11k. The long ranged and deadly accurate rail gun has been left out since there are not many open areas where it would be useful.
• Ammo will be sparse in the game, along with health. Players will have to learn to carefully budget each shot to survive. The "guns blazing" approach just won't be enough this time through.
• Mappers will be happy to know that the Windows version of DOOM will have a map editor built right into the game. That means they will be able to pull down the console type "editor" and start mapping. This also means that maps can be tested without having to launch a game every time changed were made and have to be tested. ID also promised the community comprehensive mod making tools to aid further expansion of the game.
• As far as multiplayer is concerned, DOOM 3 will not have epic team play modes, but there will be some multiplayer in it. The game will feature modes like last man standing and deathmatch. Gameplay will be limited to 4 players per game, with synchronous startup (like the old DOOM). Players will have to learn new tactics, since anyone can shoot out the lights and cover the level in darkness. Sounds, shadows, and stealth will dominate the game.

[center]Doom 3 Enemies[/]
|

| Zombies:
Ugly, slow and dead. Once alive and kicking, these rotting citizens of the Mars UAC facility have risen from the dead to make your life the same as theirs. A living hell.
| | Scientist Zombies:
Once they were the salvation of mankind. Now they are the perverse destroyer of it. Seeing as how it was their experiments that brought this upon themselves, it is a fitting end to their once masochistic lives.
| | Commando/Chaingunner Zombie:
The soldiers from Hell. Tentacle armed or chaingun equipped, these brutal killers are sent into the Mars base to track down any living survivors of the invasion and put an end to them immediately.
| | Security Zombie:
Once the protector of the UAC scientific experiment labs, these guards have turned from friend to foe with extreme vengeance.
| | MaintenanceZombie:
Once part of the maintenance staff of the UAC facility, instead of fixing the little problems around the base, these guys are now helping to create them. Usually seen armed with a chainsaw, one of their preferred tools from the days of working, these green skinned, overall wearing monsters make Leatherface look like a little girl.
|
| Imp:
These multi-eyed and quick moving creatures can leap far distances to attack you up close, or keep it's distance and hurl flesh searing fire balls at you. Deadly and silent, these creatures like to stay hidden whether it be crawling along the ceiling or crouching behind corners until the time to attack is right.
| | Pinky Demon:
Part organic and part mechanical, these demons are the Hell incarnate of a bull. Able to ram you with its shell covered head and swipe at you with its razor sharp claws. When it has you corned or pinned under it, the needle point teeth will tear into you like a hot knife through butter.
| | Lost Soul:
Traveling in packs, these fearsome heads search the base attacking any living soul they can find. Having no bodies whatsoever, they flame propelled heads are a gruesome sight to behold. When you hear the roar of their approach, be sure to stay hidden unless you have the cahones to take them all on at once.
| | Hell Knight:
The lumbering behemoth known as the Hell Knight will make even the toughest human quiver in fear. The sheer size of the beast and the ferociousness of it's attacks make it one of hells greatest killers and deadliest fiends. Able to pick up a person and toss them around like a ragdoll, these slow moving but incredibly strong creatures are not to be taken lightly.
| | Trite:
The offspring of a large spider creature, these upside-down head spiders travel in packs and are very often not seen until they are ready to spring forward and attack you. Often traveling along the ceiling and walls, they rappel to the ground using their webs and quickly creep up on you.
| | Cherub:
A demon with the face of a baby and the wings of an insect. This hideous formation of a hell demon is enough to give anyone who lays their eyes on it nightmares for weeks. The crooked smile and buzzing from the wings mesmerizes you as it flies in quickly to attack with its sharp three clawed hands.
|
| Revenant:
An apparent skeleton from afar, this creature has a semi- translucent body that surrounds its visible bones. The green glowing eyes of the skull divert your attention from the pair heat seeking rocket launchers on it's shoulders. Able to attack from a far distance and able to swing with a mean right hook when up close, this creature is not only very fast but very deadly.
| | ArchVile:
Born from the fires of Hell, the ArchVile is one of the most unique fiends to make its way to the UAC facility. Able to resurrect his fallen allies in battle this demon can also shoot a jet of flame at an enemy that will make it think twice about ever getting close to it.
