Introduction
In 1991, Ninja Gaiden was released for Nintendo Entertainment system. It was praised for not only having a perfect blend of platforming and combat, but also for having a memorable story told by use of a new technique, cinema. Ninja Gaiden was probably the first big game to tell it’s story though this art. A year later Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos was releases. It not only improved graphically, but it was not more challenging and included several new gameplay innovations. A year after that Ninja Gaiden III: Ancient Ship of Doom hit US shores. Gameplay wise, it’s considered the benchmark for all 2D ninja games, however it was shunned by many hardcore fans for the absurd and nonsensical story; A stark contrast to the prior two games. It is with the last of the NES trilogy that Ninja Gaiden most directly compares. In terms of gameplay and graphics, it’s near faultless, but it’s hampered by fragmented and idiotic storyline.
As memorable as the games themselves were, equally memorable was the young protagonist Ryu Hayabusa. For a number of years Ryu was considered the ultimate ninja, blending not only realistic and eye-pleasing atheistic, but an intangible sense of just being able to kick ass. It was for this reason that Ryu appeared in Tecmo’s famed Dead or Alive fighting series as one of the central characters with arguably the most powerful moves. Ryu now steps fully out of the shadow casts by Dead or Alive and stars in first games in over a decade, and as far as glorious returns go, they don’t get much more glorious than this.
Gameplay
Known lately for the Dead or Alive series, Team Ninja has put together one of the most challenging games to ever grace the Xbox console. Ryu has an almost unlimited arsenal of ninja moves, magic, and weapons. The action is fast and furious. In the blink of an eye you can go from full health to death! As you progress and upgrade your weapons, new moves are unlocked that help your inner ninja slash through the flesh of your enemies. Fighting multiple opponents at the same time, you run along walls, block and roll, and sink steel into bone. You gain Karma points as you defeat enemies that are used to evaluate your performance as you control Ryu during his intense battles. Pressing the white button will open the Karma window to see how much you have. At the end of each chapter of the game the total amount of Karma will be calculated and displayed and you will be given a ninja ranking. The rankings go all the way from Ninja Dog up to Ninja Master.
You start out with only the Dragon Sword, other weapons can be found later in the game. The first chapter consists of the Ninja Fortress, to help you learn your sword master techniques with some lesser ninjas. They may seem easy to some gamers, but don't worry, things get a lot tougher! Blocking is essential to keep moving through the game. Blocking will even deflect bullets from some of your opponents with guns. Jumping and running along the walls is essential to your well being. The action had my adrenaline level pumped up to the max, I almost literally needed a cigarette after each chapter!
The in game camera has to be on of the best I have ever experienced in a third person action game, but as typical with this type of game it's not perfect. In tight quarters it can get confusing. The right trigger will center it behind Ryu's back. After the first two chapters though you become very accustom to it and it does not distract from gameplay.
With countless moves and new ones learned during the game, this is a feast for the hungry action gamers out there! Power ups and health elixirs can be found hidden throughout the levels in various chests, with Ryu using a very macho kick to open them. Other items increase your overall strength and magic attacks. You will also meet Muramasa, an ancient wise man who runs a shop where items can be bought and weapons upgraded
