[XP] "system restore is not able to protect your computer"*

Bij het opstarten van system restore krijg ik de volgende error:
"system restore is not able to protect your computer, please reboot and try again"
Na een herstart of in safe mode krijg ik dezelfde error.

Ik heb geprobeerd system restore op te starten via de service manager, maar dan krijg ik opnieuw een error: "Could not start the system restore service, Error 3:
The system cannot not find the path specified."
Echter de opdrachtregel "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs" doet het bij de andere services wel...

Heeft iemand een oplossing?

Waarmee heb je gescand?
Ook op spyware gescand? HijackThis gebruikt?
Staat er bij de event viewer nuttige info? (eventvwr.msc)
Al eens bij de Microsoft Knowledgebase gekeken? (bv hier)

Je zou je HijackThis log neer kunnen zetten om uit te sluiten of het probleem daar in zit.

System Restore werkt alleen als je voldoende ruimte hebt op een partitie, hoeveel vrije ruimte heb je op je c: schijf bijvoorbeeld?

Het probleem is zeer waarschijnlijk ontstaan, nadat ik een nieuwe harddisk in mijn computer heb geplaatst. Om mijn windows instellingen te behouden heb ik de windows partitie gekopieerd (met norton ghost) naar de nieuwe harddisk. Omdat windows het serienummer van je harddisk onthoudt, start de computer niet zonder meer van de nieuwe harddisk op. Met de hierna volgende beschrijving werkt het wel. Waarschijnlijk vindt System Restore dit niet leuk. Mijn hele systeem loopt verder goed. Heeft iemand toevallig nog een ideetje?

Boot XP normally with both drives.

On mine, the boot drive is E: and the backup on the 2nd drive is G:.
With 3 partition on each drive, drive 0 has C, E, F and drive 1 has D, G, and H.

Run the regular Regedit, not Regedit32.
Hilite the HKLM key.
Use File\Load Hive to load G:\WINNT\System32\Config\SYSTEM, naming it SYS-G
or anything easily recognized.
In Regedit go to HKLM\SYS-G\MountedDevices\DosDevices\letter
These are the ones at the end of the list in
\Mounted Devices.
Swap the NAMES of C & D, E & G, F & H by temporarily renaming one to X: in between.
It failed to boot after I just deleted the
now unused keys and renamed the
others, when trying to make it boot alone.
Hilight the SYS-G hive, do a File\Unload Hive.

YES!!! It boots with a second drive present.
