Joan of Arc
History records that Jeanne d'Arc was born on or around January 6, 1412 in the village of Domremy in Champagne. Sovereignty over the region was in dispute, with King Charles VII of France and his supporters, the Armagnacs, on one side, and the Duke of Burgundy on the other, with aid from the English, part of the series of conflicts now known as the Hundred Years War that began in 1337 and ended in 1453. In the summer of 1425, the young girl first became aware of what she would later call her voices. Gradually, over a period of almost three years, they revealed a sacred task, to assist Charles, whose position was close to desperate. Her initial attempt to go to him was rebuffed by a local commander, but she would try again and succeed in March of 1429.
