Anyone who's configured FFXI knows that the resolution modes are very wierd. The "background" (3D scene) resolution is chosen independantly of the overlay (menus in the forground) Unfortunatly, the provided choices for the background resolution aren't multiples of the overlay resolution (which is the actual screen resolution). What this means is that it always uses hardware stretching for the 3D scene, and we all know what that means, blurry graphics, particularly if you're using 512x512 rendering and 640x480 or 1025x768 for the actual screen resolution.

However, you can make the background and forground resolution exactly the same by editing the values in the registry. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/PlayonlineUS/SquareEnix/FinalFantasyXI There will 2 sets of two DWORD values that correspond to the x and y res of the background and forground. First set is the forground, second set is the BG. Set them to whatever you like, but be sure to check the "decimal" option when editing them unless you can read and write numbers in hex. Using this you can also set the background resolution far in excess of what is allowed by the configuration utility. And the graphics are perfercly clear with no blurriness at all when you set the BG and FG to a 1 to 1 ratio. In theory not using stretching may also speed things up a bit.
