Vertigo Software Inc. has released Quake II .NET, a version of id Software's popular Quake II game ported to the Microsoft .NET common language runtime (CLR) using Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2003.

This application demonstrates the powerful capability of Visual C++ to retarget existing C++ code at the .NET CLR with little effort. Visual C++ .NET 2003 provides language and compiler support for optimized Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL) code generation. Together, these features enable C++ developers to write applications incorporating .NET Framework features, including garbage collection, Windows Forms, and XML Web services.

Mkay.... Dit is niet vervelend bedoeld, maar wat heeft dit met P&W te maken? Tuurlijk, het is gemaakt in .net en de omzetting daar naartoe is leuk, maar ik weet niet of hier nou een leuke discussie door loskomt oid. Overigens was ik de link ook al diverse keren tegen gekomen. En dat zal iedereen die MSDN wel eens bezoekt ook wel gezien hebben.

Dit is uiteraard een leuke manier om .Net nog een keer extra te promoten: een vaak gespeelde game die in die taal laten geschreven is op de site zetten. Er zullen in ieder geval veel mensen alleen al naar kijken of het er beter op geworden is. Dus: puntje voor Microsoft. Top-promotie!

Het is prima als je een discussie wilt starten over de migratie van c++ naar .net, maar dit lijkt me meer wat voor het kleine nutteloze mededelingen topic.
