Volgens mij is ie nu alleen in de VS verlopen. Ze (Unisys) hebben namelijk ook een patent in Canada, Japan, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Italie en Groot-Britannië

UPDATED GIF INFORMATION, 06/17/03: Many have asked whether gd will support creating GIF files again after June 20th, 2003, when the well-known Unisys LZW patent expires. Although this patent exires in the US soon, this patent does not expire for another year in the rest of the world. Since I have no way of limiting distribution of GIF-creating code to US users only, I have opted to follow the same policy that the ImageMagick authors are following: GIF creation will not reappear in gd until the patent expires world-wide on July 7th, 2004. I realize this situation is frustrating for many; please direct your anger and complaints toward the questionable patent system that allows the patenting of such straightforward algorithms in the first place. Thank you!

Erg jammer, mij lijkt het dat mensen teruggrijpen naar .GIF na dit nieuws terwijl een betere vervanger er gewoon al even is, PNG en MNG, enkel jammer dat MNG zo weinig ondersteund word, ik dacht zelfs dat ze in mozilla de support voor MNG gingen verwijderen.

En PNG zuigt onder IE aangezien die de alpha layer niet ondersteund, nu weet ik dat er een soort van 'dirty hack' voor beschikbaar is maar die heeft allerlei rare gevolgen zoals images die een voor een verdwijnen etc.

Op zich zouden de mensen van PHP kunnen beslissen om in de met PHP gebundelde GD-versie wel gif-support te bouwen. Er is een paar dagen geleden wel even over gediscussieerd op PHPdev: http://groups.google.com/...0FreeBSD.csie.NCTU.edu.tw
