Xbox Live and Wireless Networks
Recently, the cost of wireless networking equipment has dropped dramatically, making wireless networking an attractive option for many home networks. Wireless networking is a particularly attractive alternative when you want to connect devices that are in locations where it is difficult or expensive to run Ethernet cables.
To connect your Xbox console to the Internet for Xbox Live service using a wireless network, you need to purchase a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge.
If you choose wireless networking, note that:
- Microsoft supports only Xbox Compatible wireless-to-Ethernet bridges, designated by the Xbox Compatible logo.

Xbox Compatible devices integrate with the Xbox Dashboard and have been fully tested to support all features of Xbox Live. - Microsoft does not provide any technical support or troubleshooting related to any wireless-to-Ethernet devices that are not Xbox Compatible logo–certified. If you have any questions or problems with these devices, you should contact the manufacturer of the device, not Microsoft.
- If your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge is not Xbox Compatible, you will likely need to configure it with a PC before connecting it to your Xbox console. Links to step-by-step instructions by the specific manufacturer to configure their products for use with Xbox Live are provided below.
- Depending on the distance between the Xbox console and the wireless router or base station, the construction and contents of your home, the presence of other wireless devices in your home (for example, cordless phones), and other sources of interference (such as microwave ovens), wireless networking can suffer from interference and signal strength problems. This could result in the following issues when playing games on Xbox Live:
- Difficulty finding and connecting to sessions.
- Disconnection or dropping from sessions.
- Lag or other poor in-game performance
