The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to assist with issues related to drive noise, excessive noise or a sudden increase in the level or type of noise. This document will also provide the steps necessary to troubleshoot noise related issue.
Cause:
Hard drives will make noise during normal use. The level and type of noise may change depending on the function the drive is performing. Users must be able to distinguish normal noises from detrimental, abnormal noises.
Normal sounds include:
1. whining noise during drive spin-up
2. regular clicking or tapping sounds during drive access
3. hard clicks when the drive heads park
Abnormal noises include:
1. high pitched whining sound can be an indication of abnormal function
2. noises can be caused by mounting issues. This is due to either a high frequency vibration in the mounting hardware, or a potential drive failure
3. repeated, regular tapping, grinding or beeping. There are no Maxtor hard drives designed to emit beep codes when failing. Some failure mechanisms may make a regular repeating beep, but it is not a beep code. If a drive failure is possible, it is always important to make an immediate backup.
Solution:
After powering down the computer, disconnect the hard drive from ONLY the data cable. If the noise stops, check the physical installation of the hard drive.
Reduce the data cable length.
Check the jumpers and BIOS configuration.
Set the hard drive as the only device on controller.
Remove other peripherals and cards from the system.
Remove the hard drive from the mounting brackets and place the hard drive securely on an insulated surface. If noise stops after the hard drive is removed from the mounting brackets, check cables for twisting, warping and insert gasket washers between the mounting brackets and drive screws.
Reconnect the data cable and boot into Windows. Run the automatic hardware detection. Sometimes this can stop noises from hard drives (only if they're not related to the mounting of the drive or any vibrations in the system, of course).
het lijkt dus meer erop dat het parking is van de hd. Zou dan normaal moeten zijn. Ik backup wel wat vaker. als ik geen problemen tegen kom ljikt mij dat er niets aan de hand is.
