Hm sterker nog Sega wil niet fuseren met Sammy maar Sega
gaat fuseren met Sammy en wel op 1 oktober 2003.
Sammy, most famous outside of Japan for publishing the
Guilty Gear series will merge with Sega on October 1st
2003. Sammy has departments both in the US and Europe, but
inside the borders of Japan, Sammy are best known for being
the largest maker of pachinko machines. These include
everything from slot machines to those Deer Hunting arcade
games, and other amusement machines offering players prizes
or tickets for example.
Sega is taking a 54% share in Sammy, but Hajime Satomi, the
president of Sammy will take over as the president of the
new combined company. Sammy has 752 employees, and because
of the success and cheap development costs of their popular
machines and toys, their profits are a fantastic addition
to the troubled Sega.
Sega dropped their profits forecast for this financial year
from five billion yen to 500 million yen, which comes in at
only around US$4.12 million. This is blamed on poor sales
of software in the US, in particular the heavily advertised
NFL 2K3.
"By combining both companies' technological and
developmental abilities, Sammy's high growth power and
Sega's global brand power, we will be able... to address
the needs of a large range of global customers spanning a
wide age range," the two firms said in a statement.
Naturally there are still a lot more details to be
finalized, but Mr Satomi has already stated he doesn't want
to drop the brand name "Sega". Back in 1997 Sega was to
merge with Bandai, the maker of the popular virtual pet,
Tamagotchi. This merge to "SegaBandai" was also planned to
happen on the first of an October, but was later called off
by Bandai. This was largely because of insiders at Bandai
that saw too many differences in the corporate cultures,
but also because they didn't believe a merger would have
much of an effect on either company.
The new firm created by Sega and Sammy will, according to
financial analysts, be worth an estimated 290 billion yen.
To help bring up next years earnings, Sega have also
delayed several of their PS2 titles by a month into the new
financial year.
Sega's development teams will also be restructured to make
games that are better suited to, and to be more popular in
the USA and Europe. Quite how that will be done remains to
be seen, but as October 1st draws closer more details on
the merger will be announced.
One thing seems certain though, with the added cash Sammy
brings in on a regular basis, this is good news for Sega,
and good news for their gamers.
