AOPEN AW180 PCI AUDIO CARD ESS SOLO-1 CHIP
- THE ECONOMICAL CHOICE
Based on PC98 specifications, the ISA bus will not be supported by future motherboard designs. It is obvious that PCI audio will replace the ISA audio card. To provide more choices to our customers, AOpen has designed a PCI solution, AW180, based on ESS Solo-1 chip. AW180 meets PCI and PC97/PC98 requirements but remains cost-effective. The AW180 Solo-1 PCI AudioDrive solution implements a single-chip PCI audio solution, providing high-quality audio processing while maintaining full legacy DOS game compatibility. With dynamic range over 80 dB, AW180 complies with Microsoft PC 97/PC 98 specifications and meets WHQL audio requirements. The card also includes software device driver support for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 98 (using a Windows 98 WDM MiniPort driver to implement multi-stream PCI digital audio). AW180 Solo-1 forms a complete audio subsystem on a single chip.
AW180 Solo-1 incorporates microcontroller, ESFM™ music synthesizer, 3-D stereo effects processor, 16-bit stereo wave ADC and DAC, MPU-401 UART mode serial port, dual game port, hardware master volume control, serial port interface to external wavetable music synthesizer, DMA control logic with FIFO, and PCI bus interface logic. There are three stereo inputs (typically line-in, CD audio, and auxiliary line) and a mono microphone input. Meanwhile, AW180 also provides mono-input and mono-out for modem speakerphone application. AW180 is also fully compliant with the low-power specifications for APM (Advanced Power Management), PPMI (PCI Power Management Interface), and ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface), providing complete suspend-and-resume, power-down, and wakeup functions for low power and battery operation. It implements 3D audio effects with ESS software drivers compatible with Microsoft DirectX API, and with a Spatializer 3D processor licensed from Spatializer Audio Laboratories, Inc. The Spatializer circuitry produces dynamic 3D sound effects for real-time enhancement of the PC's on-screen action.
Full DOS game compatibility is supported in AW180 through three hardware implementations: PC/PCI, distributed DMA (DDMA), and transparent DMA (TDMA). While PC/PCI and DDMA are industry standard protocols for legacy support, TDMA is an ESS Technology design that implements DOS game compatibility over a standard PCI v.2.1 bus, without the need for any additional sideband signals. Solo-1 implements DOS game compatibility for both PC motherboard and PC add-in card solutions. Solo-1 also integrates ESS CD-quality ESFM™ music synthesizer (SoundBlaster and SoundBlaster Pro compatible), which implements high-quality FM synthesis for DOS games, and drives the 3D VBX soundfield effects processor to produce the industry's richest-sounding PCI single-chip audio processor.
