Vodafone on Thursday pulled out of the bidding for MMO2's lossmaking Dutch mobile phone business leaving Ben, Deutsche Telekom's mobile arm in the Netherlands, as the most likely suitor.
Having studied sale documents for the business, Vodafone on Thursday told MMO2 that it was no longer interested. It is believed Vodafone was put off by the costs of integrating the business into its Dutch operations.
Deutsche Telekom is understood to be still continuing with talks, according to people close to the discussions. Analysts have estimated MMO2's Dutch business, which has 1.3m customers, is worth between €100m-€300m ($106m-$318mm).
However, the German telecoms operator is thought to be unwilling to pay for the business given the low quality of the customers - almost three quarters are low spending pre-pay users - and the potentially high costs of laying off staff following integration of the two businesses.
Analysts expect MMO2's Dutch arm to consume more than £65m of cash in the current financial year. Yet, despite the heavy losses of the local operations, it is far from clear whether MMO2 would be prepared to give them away.
The Dutch offshoot was set up in 1996 as a joint venture between BT Group and Nederlandse Soorwegen, the Dutch railway company. BT bought the remaining 50 per cent stake for £1.2bn in 2000.
Most analysts and investors would welcome a sale by MMO2's Dutch arm which few believe can ever reach profitability. With five operators, the Netherlands is one of the most competitive mobile markets in Europe. MMO2, formerly Telfort Mobiel, ranks in the bottom three with a market share of about 11 per cent.
