i think i finally have it solved and am offering this post to others
that may find themselves in the same sad spot i was in.

all of a sudden (about a month ago) my system started rebooting.
there didn't seem to be a pattern to it until one day i turned it on,
didn't touch it all day and examined the event log later.
it was apparent that the machine was rebooting every hour automatically
but there was no event logged that gave me any clue as to why!
this rebooting even occured in safe mode.
i went to My Computer: Properties: Advanced: Startup and Recovery... and
unchecked the Automatically reboot box.
this resulted in a blue screen of death (BSOD) instead of a reboot.
sorry, i don't have the BSOD message written down any more.
i tried to run windows 2000 setup to recover the system using an
emergency recovery disk.
this was a _big_ mistake.
after trying this i could no longer boot my system at all - during the
boot it would get a BSOD.
i could not even boot in failsafe mode.
so, i started a brand new install (same windows 2000 professional) on
another disk drive that i had.
interestingly enough, this install yielded the BSOD every hour with
nothing but windows 2000 professional installed!

installing windows 2000 service pack 2 did not help.
apparently, classpnp.sys has something to do with disk access.
i did find something in my searches that suggested that my maxtor ultra
ata 100 controller card might have something to do with it.
on a whim, i downloaded and installed the latest device driver
(ultra.sys) from maxtor.
lo and behold, the rebooting stopped!
however, some symptoms remained...
now every hour there was an event (id 52) in the system event log
reported from the "Disk" source:
The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 has
predicted that it will fail.
Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk
drive.
A failure may be imminent.
this was the disk with my original install!
i downloaded the latest POWERMAX diagnostic utility from maxtor and ran
the first two tests which reported:
SMART attribute check ... Failed
SMART parameter failure, parameter 00a
...diagnotstic software reported error code: T6HS20
:
Run SMART Self Test ..... Failed
SMART Process Check failure, general error.
...diagnostic software reported error code: T6HS57
the maxtor web site tells me the action to take for these error codes
(S20 and S57) is to "Replace Drive".
i called tech support and they did not offer any explanation for these
errors but offered to replace the drive under warranty.
i am now waiting to receive the new drive.
i believe the problem started with a faulty disk drive.
in particular, either the SMART diagnostic firmware on the drive became
faulty or it began to report faults.
the original ultra ata 1000 device driver i had could not handle this
exceptional condition - resulting in the crashes.
when this device driver was upgraded, the condition was handled and
reported in the event log.
evidently, the "Disk" (name of the event source) kernel software polls
for this information every hour.
if you are having these symptoms i suggest on upgrading the device
driver, checking the event log and running powermax.
do not attempt to use the windows 2000 setup to repair windows as it
seems to have destroyed mine instead.
while i was able to save the data off the original disk, i have not been
able to repair windows 2000 on it and will have to reinstall everything
when i get the new drive.
